Singer Hannah Reid (born on 30 December 1989) and guitarist Dan Rothman met in the dorms of Nottingham University where they began writing music together in 2009. They later added multi-instrumentalist Dot Major to complete the London Grammar line-up.

Maybe
London Grammar Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
For me as well
Ooh
You did always, take the weather
Be the one
To carry on
Aha, aha
Like you always, do
Photographs, oh you look so well
And from here
I can tell
You'll take a step away from what was so near
And where are you now
Without a sound
Are you there
And the face in the crowd
Feet over harsh ground
Are you there somewhere
Maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe, darling
Oh oh oh, ho
Maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe, darling
Oh oh oh, ho
Quiet
Company
Is for you
Is for you to keep
Photographs, oh you look so well
And from here
I can tell
You'll take a step away from what was so near
And where are you now
Without a sound
Are you there
And the face in the crowd
Feet over harsh ground
Are you there somewhere
Maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe, darling
Oh oh oh, ho
Maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe, darling
Oh oh oh, ho
And where are you now
Without a sound
Are you there
And a face in the crowd
Feet over harsh ground
Are you there somewhere
Maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe, darling
Oh oh oh, ho (are you there somewhere)
Maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe, darling
Oh oh oh, ho (are you there somewhere)
The lyrics of "Maybe" by London Grammar are focused on a person who is trying to reach out to someone they may have lost contact with or who has withdrawn from their life. They begin by addressing this person, saying that they used to live life to the fullest together, but the other person has withdrawn, leaving them behind. The singer of the song notices that the other person still manages to look well, but they are distant, and the singer can't seem to find them. The lines "And where are you now, without a sound?" and "Are you there, and a face in the crowd?" suggest that the singer is searching for this person, even in crowds, but they are unresponsive. The phrase "feet over harsh ground" further describes the distance the other person has created between them.
The chorus of the song consists of the word "maybe" repeated several times. This word has several meanings in the song. It could signify a sense of doubt or hesitation, but it could also show the singer's hope that they will reunite with the other person, suggesting they are unsure if they will. The line "Quiet company is for you, is for you to keep" mirrors the overall theme of the song - the distance between two people who were once close. It also suggests that the other person prefers to remain silent at this time, which may indicate something has happened in the past that has strained their relationship.
Overall, "Maybe" is a song that captures the feelings of longing, loss, and uncertainty that come with a relationship that has dissolved. The singer is searching for meaning and understanding in hope of recovering this relationship. The song's meaning is incredibly relatable, and it speaks to anyone who has ever experienced distance or displacement in their relationships.
