I found a discounted finish of trafficmaster a month ago at Home Depot on clearance for only 43 cents per sq ft. Originally $2.00 per sq ft. I couldn’t even break the locking joint with my hands. Installed very easy. Great finish. Got 580 sq ft for only $249. So happy with the results.

Currently Installing lifeproof luxury planks in large basement and it’s going pretty well. One thing I wish I knew before starting was just how fragile the locking mechanisms are. Extra care should be used when emptying the boxes, don’t just dump them out and let them hit the ground. Also, use care in transporting them, the boxes are large and heavy so depending on how you load them into your vehicle, one pot hole can take out an entire box.

We used Lifeproof and we have been very happy with it. We have two dogs and high traffic areas and it has really held up. It was very easy to install and I liked the fact it has no formaldehyde in the product.

Recently did a bathroom in Traffic Master waterproof rigid core from Home Depot. Went together really quick, and cutting it was a breeze. Lock edges didn't break off too quick and it seems to be holding up pretty well. No underlayment required makes for an extremely quick install.

Wow, watching you snap away the locking mechanism on these planks makes me realize just that much more how important it is to make sure the floor is completely flat. There are so many videos out there on how to pick out LVP, but I think this is just about the best one I've seen. Thanks for posting, good useful information.

Just did my first floor using Life Proof from the H depot. It really looks great. Super durable while sliding my appliances around and worked wel on top of an existing hardwood subfloor. Highly recommend if you can wing the money.

I have 2 high energy dogs and scratch resistant flooring was a high priority for me when I was shopping for flooring material. Everything I read about the various flooring options claimed that laminate is more scratch resistant than LVP, so to test that, I used my house key rather than a butter knife. I had to really dig in with the key to scratch both the Mohawk and Shaw laminates, but the same test on the LVP was a real eye opener to it's poor scratch resistance. It took very little effort to make highly visible scratches on the LVP. I still had one concern with the laminate however, and that was how well the laminate material would hold up to standing water. For that test, I again used samples from both Shaw and Mohawk laminate, as drink coasters for a week. I also placed laminate samples in my kitchen sink and left them there to be exposed to my everyday sink usage. Both the Mohawk and Shaw samples that were used as coasters held up fine and showed no sign of water damage what-so-ever. The samples I placed in the sink were a different story however. The Shaw flooring sample was twice as thick as the Mohawk so I expected it to be an unfair comparison; but the Shaw sample swelled and warped within the first day. The Mohawk sample held up for 2 and a half days before I saw visible signs of water damage. The Shaw sample swelled and warped at both the joint and face, and it was completely ruined. The Shaw flooring would have to be replaced if it were on a real floor. The Mohawk sample curled slightly at the joint and a crack developed, but to my surprise, the joint remained very rigid and easily snap together with the other Mohawk samples, and there was no noticeable gaps where the samples snapped together. From my layman experiment, I believe the water damage to the Mohawk was not severe enough to require it be replaced if it had occurred in a low traffic area. A high traffic section of flooring would have most likely caused the cracked joint to break off completely, so replacement would have ultimately been required in that scenario. I didn't try to snap the locking system to see how strong it was, but the Shaw's was much thicker and I expected it to be much stronger that the surprising thing Mohawk locking system, but that was not the case, the Mohawk was superior. The flooring company where I obtained the samples, really promoted the Shaw flooring as being the superior quality, but my simple tests proved different. Long story short, my tests gave me peace of mind about going with laminate flooring made by Mohawk. It looks great and is holding up very well and best of all, Mohawk was less expensive than Shaw. I'm happy with Mohawk and will purchase this brand again in the future.

After watching your videos I decided to redo the floors with a newer type of SPC plank,have to say the tips I learned from you made the process and the finished product 1000% better!....I even manufactured my own tapping block and heavy duty pull bar after your advise on the cheap rubbish ones 🍻.I pride myself with 30+ years as a tradesman with the ability to do a lot of things, but you sir, with your humility and knowledge sharing ...I tip my hat 🎩 thank you 👍👍👍

Currently installing 1,100 sf of Lifeproof woodacres oak. It has gone together tight and square. So far happy with it. I noticed the locking edges are somewhat fragile and can break if you step on them or accidentally kick them before installing the next row.

I installed carpet for a living in the 90s and installing vinyl plank is so much easier. I love the durability and installation ease. I just installed Corelux blue pine in my son's apt. It looks great. The subfloor was very uneven and the Corelux went together easy. I didn't have a tapping block or a tapping bar for up against walls. Super happy with Corelux.

Great info! We installed Shaw Montana (Madrid shade) in 3 bedrooms. The locking system was pretty thin. So far no problems, but light wear with just two adults, no kids/pets in house. Will definitely remember your tips for any future installations. Thank you so much for your videos!

Great video I already did a room using Ashland Grove by Hampstead that I purchased at Floor & Decor. This was my first time doing it and it went down very nicely had no issues whatsoever but still a little nervous about doing the rest of the house since this is only about $1.29 a square foot. I did the butter knife test and I tried to break the edge. This stuff passed both tests now I feel much more comfortable about going ahead and doing the rest of the house. Keep doing what you do!

I’ve installed plank a lot and one of the better ones I’ve used is called Engage it has the pad attached to it. Which I think is another great point because typically they put the pad on the better quality flooring. So that’s something to keep in mind. But that Engage vinyl plank installs very easy and has a great locking system unfortunately I’m not sure who makes it but it stays tight and has a very durable surface! It’s one of my favorites! I’ve done a few floors here and there. Used both the Costco Mohawk and H.D. Lifeproof. Much preferred the Lifeproof as far as ease of installation. With the Mohawk you had to angle the small end joint in first the try and angle the long seam joint after and it’s a PIA. With the Lifeproof just angle the board in along the long seam and slide it over tight to previous board tap to lock in then tap the end joint down to lock it in, much easier!

I put in Lifeproof from homedepot in the new mastersuite/addition I added on almost 1.5 years now. 1st flooring I have done and seemed to go pretty good. Like you have mentioned the snap edge was weak and hard to tap. I tried to use a scrap piece but was easier to have a nice straight edged 1x6 and moved it to the next edge as it wore down. Over all went well, scored and cut easy, layed down good. this was the 3 piece pattern and has held up to 2 dogs and day to day use from a 20 year old living in it.

Now I am doing most of the house and now have access to better that you can not find in the box store. Went with the Nova Serenbe Stratford. Have only seen the sample and waiting for the 1 pallets to come in. Seems to be thicker 5.5mil and hope will be a good fit for 1800sq ft of flooring I am doing with it.

For those looking for the top wear layer its called the 'MIL' layer. With the MIL layer there's a number associated with it (MIL 6 -20). The higher the number of the MIL Layer the better or 'thicker' the layer. This is the most important layer for wear. Most packages will list the MIL layer but some do not and in those cases do your research before purchase. You need to google that exact make/model for the MIL layer #. If you go to a big box store and it's not on the package chances are its a low MIL # 6-8. IMO any MIL that's lower than an 8 can expect to wear quicker. Anything that's above a 12 MIL can expect to last longer. Vinyl flooring MIL numbers can go as high as 20 MIL and may go higher. Also IMO with pets you're going to want a higher MIL #.

I installed 22 mil vinly plank in my basement, nearly impossible to score and snap with a utility knife. Had to resort to putting a utility knife blade in an oscillating tool, or use a circular saw.

The top layer - known as the wear layer - comes in different thicknesses and is usually a major factor in determining the performance, warranty length and cost of the product. The reference to “mil” is literally a unit of measurement. 1 mil = 1/1000 of an inch. The higher the “mil”, the thicker the wear layer and the longer the product will resist wear. Anything below 12 mil should be considered base grade and 20 mil and above is normally required for Commercial use.

I’ve installed several floors (5/8” bamboo, other floating floors, and some repairs to oak floors), the Vinyl Laminate from Costco, Mohawk brand, was the easiest and so seems very durable. It locked in very tight, and like you said, the locking system was strong. Thanks to another of your videos I installed a floor starting in the hallway that went right and left before it entered the main rooms; was nit a straight shot to the main rooms. And o worked forward and backwards. I used a laser level/line because I was not confident in my ability to chalk, but it worked great. Glad I started in the hallway. Take care of you’re self, hope you’re not punishing your body too much; flooring is hard on the body.

Thanks for taking so much of your time over the past few years. I learned most of my hard to do skills for vinyl plank from your videos. We are about to do it again in our first rent house and need to get this right the first time. We got lucky with Global GEMs the first time (tri plank design), and this video helped point out the other quality checks we were missing. Keep the honesty flowing. When you spend 5K you don't need to be basing decisions on anything less then honest experience for those that do it every day. I would like to suggest a pressure test. We took several different brands home the first time, got our dining room 4 legged chairs on it, and my 240 pounds leaned the chair back on 2 legs, just like we all do when we have company at the table. The "dentabiltiy" told another part of the wear/quality story for us as well. Loved the butter knive test and sand under foot wear tests you mentioned! Keep up the great work!

In the past 4 months I have done 3 vinyl plank floors. 1 was a cheapo floor, $2/sqft from Home Depot, looked good when done, but took a lot of extra work. The other 2 were Smart core from Lowes, both went together very easy and look great. I have a forth next week, they have not decided what kind yet.

I installed Coretec Plus in living room and it's very tight and still looks like new. I didn't put pads down and got a couple of dents, but ran a wet rag and iron over them and now can't even see them. Scuffs wipe up really easy. Pretty happy with this floor!

I installed the “Home Decorations” brand vinyl plank from Home Depot about 2 years ago and it installed pretty easily. I think it looks great. In my kitchen, which is the largest area roughly 12ftx12ft, I have a few gaps on the butt joints. I’m not sure if this was because of me or the floor. But I am otherwise pleased with it, though I do think I’m going with a higher quality brand for the other areas to avoid this.

We just did our entire first floor with flooring liquidators core-lock brand. It’s thin, went down easy, the only problems were because we didn’t know how to do it properly. Beginning was a little rough, learned a lot by the end though. Wasn’t the product spot necessarily. I seem to be having an easier time than my neighbor who is helping. Our house was the guinea pig, now I’m going to be helping him with his house…. 🤷‍♂️

Just installed Great Lakes vinyl plank over the last few days. As a first-timer it went pretty smoothly and easily. The worst part was whittling the small corners with a knife to trim it because I didn’t have a dremel. I have no qualms about installing this vinyl plank in the rest of the house by myself. I will say I used a miter saw to cut with. Great Lakes suggests score and snap, but the thickness of the vinyl means too much effort to use for a whole room’s planks. I would suggest the perfect setup would be miter saw, table saw (for long and straight cuts), Dremel (for minor details), rubber mallet, speed square, spacers, pencil, and a thin-line marker. My tool list excludes specific flooring tools like a vinyl cutter or a vinyl floor installation kit which are great but also not absolutely necessary for anything other than this specific type of work. Have an awesome day and rock on 🤘.

My mom and sister in law have life proof LVP throughout their entire house and they love it, it looks amazing too! We are wanting to replace all the flooring in our house. The previous owners put a wood laminate in and it looked beautiful... until you have dogs and kids spilling stuff and making a mess. You can’t exactly mop it. It’s warped and scratched everywhere and I can’t wait to get new floors. Thanks for the info!

This guy is BANG ON when he is mentioning the edge locking system. I am currently going through alot of heartache over a job I did 4 years ago where the floor that was laid over a cement floor now has seams that now have huge flex and ends that have literally cracked off over time.

I was informed too late for me to do any void filling before things broke or cracked but in defense of the client how would anyone even think to complain because the floor has some flex?

Glad I bought the Mohawk 4.2 MM. Did the kitchen and dining room with ease. It has held up like a pro for over a year with very high traffic from all our guests, dogs, children and grandkid. Just make sure the floor is level and you put padding in even if the plank is self padded.

Thank you! We just returned a load of lowes shaw product after testing the paper-thin locking system. I'm a female w/ tiny fingers & was able to easily snap it off. We went w/ Lifeproof rigidcore. Much better product! I installed 1100 sq ft myself. You prevented a catastrophe, & saved us $5k, I could never have done it without you & your channel! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

Great video. Learned a lot. I just moved into a newly constructed home and had the Adura-Max LVP installed lookes great. Seems really durable. My first home with LVP flooring. Here's my question. I have a second story loft that I'm having a pool table installed next month. The table weighs about 1100 or so pounds. The feet on this brand of table (Brunswick) are circular about 6 inches in diameter. Not sure what's on the bottom of the feet. I'm wondering if it's okay install the table directly on the planks or if I should put a 12x12 inch piece of hardwood, 1/4 inch thick, under each leg to disperse the pressure on the floor. I really don't want to put carpet under the table because once it's there, it's there for good. I'd love to hear your thoughts if you have experience with really objects like a pool table on LVP floors.

We installed Adura Max 4 years ago throughout most of our house by watching your videos. THANK YOU!!! We have had zero issues with lots of Dogs & teenagers!
We are now looking to install LVP in a rental property that is over 100years old with nothing being straight or level. We repaired high and low spots the best we could and put 1/2inch plywood on top of old hardwood floors as subfloor. I was planning to go with a less expensive product this time (close to 2400 sq feet). Is there any other specific product you would recommend that will be forgiving of a not perfectly level subfloor?

Been getting samples of different flooring, doing my own tests (my friends think I'm crazy for hammering and soaking them in water), and about to get a Shaw Floorte 20 mil sample in soon. Life proof is a decent option for the money, but with my experience with this type of flooring I’m going to have to say that the Floor & Decor store has hit the nail perfectly with the laminate floor they sell. The STC ratings are very good and they have think durable waterproof planks

Nice vid but i had purchased the exact off brand you had shown an DYI installed floor 4 months earlier than this video (2-3 planker). I agree that the snaps were brittle an the butt end snap n locks were the worst and really had to play out the 7 random patterns so not to have them grouped to close and look random. Using scrap as sacrificial planks were the only way as to not damage the individual plank edges. Install Large room continued into 20 ft L shaped hall way made for lots of planning an adjusting the install for parallelism on the long runs along the walls in a75 yr old house. Durability is good thus far but is light traffic with no kids.

Our test, at least for laminate water resistance at the edges, is quite simple but extremely effective.

Set the pieces together. Get a cup of ice water, full. Place the cup of ice water on the seam and leave it overnight.

The condensation from the cup will add a little, but not a huge amount, if water for a longer period than just a simple splash and wait.

We found all pergo branded laminates to fail that test extremely poorly.

I'm considering that as well. My only concern is it possible not laying flat in a big room. I saw some other reviews saying don't use these lock systems in larger rooms cause you don't use glue. I actually don't want to use glue in case I have to take it up, but don't want it ever to buckle or start lifting up etc.
Also, I know you have to make sure the surface is flat and level.

I truly appreciate your detailed information & very honest/good advice. We live in Florida & need a vinyl plank flooring that is good quality plus pretty much waterproof/water resistant. We found something we liked at Floor & Decor. It’s pretty heavy/durable & good pricing. Unfortunately the one we really wanted has been on back order for a few months now. What’s your opinion on Floor & Decor’s vinyl plank flooring brand? Any suggestions on something comparable to it? We really need to get this done. Over 6 months ago we had a water pipe break in the wall in my bedroom & within 10-15 minutes had major flooding in 2 rooms/hallway in our house. Had to tear out the carpet & have water restoration. Really appreciate advice on great vinyl plank flooring available here in Florida, that people are truly happy with. Thank you in advance & feel free to tell me what you have/recommend/like. 🙏🙏🙏

My wife had ceramic flooring with the same locking system as this installed three years ago. It came with a 50 year warranty. Within two years the high traffic areas of our home the flooring is cracking along the edge of the planks where they lock together. We are now in a battle with the flooring company to get the floor replaced under warranty. They said they only installed this flooring in two homes and we are the only customer with a problem that they are aware of.

Hi Joe. I'm thinking of doing my kitchen with vinyl plank like you showed but I don't understand 2 things. Why don't the planks just separate from each other after a while? You have to leave space around the installation so there is "wiggle room" there. Why don't they just eventually work themselves apart? And two, why doesn't the entire floor move as a unit, again because of the space between the wall and the edge? Thanks for any help!

We had Mannington Adura Max installed in our home 3 years ago and absolutely love it, our installers were impressed and thankful to install such a quality product. Once you've had that quality it's very difficult to look at anything else. It was recommended by a friend, I recommended it to 5 people, who also had it installed and love it.

Been a general contract out here in LA for 40 years, done tile floors but the first time for LVT in my place. I'm going to install Mohawk from Costco. I'll let you know the outcome. Thanks for all the great install info from several of your videos.

We installed Calibamboo Seaboard Oak long boards. For the most part they are amazing. Very strong! The quality is top notch. But possibly because of the long length and wide width (9" x 71") combined with our imperfect subfloor we have a couple spots of separation (3 spots over our entire 2nd floor) Can't get them to tap into place. Don't know how this is gonna work out over time. Don't know if I am going to regret installing it ourselves. It was pricy at $4.19 per square foot. Overall I LOVE the look and feel of it. Has a great wear layer. We had to be careful not a speck of dust was in the locking system or it wouldn't lock in correctly. But the parts that locked in did so PERFECTLY. I am still not sure what to do about those 3 problem areas...

I installed Quick Step from Lowes and had good success. Passed the scratch test, locks together tight and has a very tough tongue. It also comes with an attached backing. Wish I would of watched your videos beforehand. But, I am getting ready to remodel an entire house and will be using laminate all throughout. Also, as a fellow believer in the Lord Jesus Christ I appreciate your knowledging Him.

I used Lowe's top of the line LifeProof flooring that was dropping lock waterproof vinyl here recently and every time I had to lock it in it seemed like it wanted to Crease it very bad like it was going to break it but did not break just bent and when the light hits you can slightly see the bevel in it

We just did about 1,000 sq/ft of Shaw's Floorte Pro Series. It has the hard grey core, not the softer white core featured. The locking system is super tough, and surface seems durable to scratch tests. It was also one of the most realistic textures that we could find. We were very happy with the install process and finished product.

We had Home Decorators brand ridgid core plank from Home Depot down a year ago. All of the planks are warping on the long edge. Both long edges have started to curve upwards like a up. We were redoing the entire house so the trim had never been installed yet. The planks have plenty of space around the edges all around. We are currently battling Home Depot to warranty it all because we can’t get the company to respond to us or Home Depot at all. Home Depot is looking into their insurance covering it. Do not buy that stuff. No one knows why it is doing that.

Years ago I did columbia click maple laminated (MAC1)- over 1200 square feet - and I can tell you it looks great after 10 years, but some the seams do not hold up to water; near bathrooms. I am looking forward to using your videos to do my kitchen with LVP. I will probably go with Shaw.. Thank you

did a 1700 sqft modular home. started with NuCore from Floor & Decor. Looks great, pain in the * to install, a fight all the way. Gave up, took it back, argued for my money back, went to Costco and bought the Mohawk 'misty harbor oak' for about 80 cents less per sqft than the NuCore. It's 5mm vs 6mm but went together almost too easy. So far with work boots, big dogs, and the occasional pitching wedge....so good.

So informative…thank you! We have been considering this as a fix for an old beat up wood floor. I have a question I believe I know the answer to…I just want to be wrong! 😊 We have stone tiles that butt up against the wood floor. It divides the dining area and the family space in the townhouse. Can this plank be installed without the stability of baseboards/walls on all sides? I foresee the unwanted job of refinishing wood floors in my future! 😊

I will be attempting to install lvp for my first time while remodeling my home. Your videos have given me the confidence to try it on my own. The best I've came across. I will be joining your laminate university when I'm closer to budget. I was really leaning toward SPC instead of WPC because of the dent / scratch factor though. We had picked out a Paramount SPC product because of the color. After watching this, the locking system breaks very easily when tested that way. Is there an SPC product that you recommend? Or am I overthinking the dent / scratch factor? Thanks!

I honestly would not get wrapped up in SPC vs. WPC because they are both superior products. If this was a commercial environment than I would use an SPC.

I have been installing floors for 23yrs. I started when I was 14 with my dad, and have been doing flooring ever since.(only hard surface). I also am from Minnesota. I subcontract for 2 stores in particular, and have my name on both walls as their top installer.. I do support the mannignton rigid concept. Tuffcore, floorte, and coretec are some close secondary options. The battle between Congoleme and Armstrong and Mannignton still continues.. good vid my dude.. that being said.. if your snapping ends off, consider the way you use a tapping block.. still like your honest opinion, and your dont get shamboozald approach..

We had Shaw Fusion Hi-Traffic with Coretec a month ago throughout the entire house. It looks very good. I am a worry wart. I hope it will look good for many years to come. I will retire soon and this should to the last fooring I buy. The store that I purchased from (paid the to install too) also had Mohawk and Mannington. Again, I hope our flooring will last.

I had Adura Max Meridian in Stucco installed in our kitchen about three years ago. The installer said we made a very good choice and he enjoyed installing it. With stainless appliances it looks stunning and we have gotten many compliments on it. It is easy to keep clean. We have bar stools on it with traffic every meal time. No issues with wear or buckling. It has been worth every penny!

We bought Shaw timberidge in honey walnut and it was super easy to install. No gaps and it looks perfect but now I’m concerned since you mentioned Shaw in your video.. I’ll have to do some testing on the scraps that I have left and will update.

Hello! I can’t tell you how many times in my flooring hunt I have came back to this video! You are the one that introduced to the Mannington LVP- we’ve been searching for the right specs & shade. It’s been about 6/7 months and I finally found a shade I love- and it happened to be a Mannington Adura Max shade! My concern is that this is a wpc- and I’ve heard over and over to go with a SPC. Luckily they have this shade in Mannington Rigid as well- which is SPC- my concern there is that the planks are only 5.5mm thick w attached pad & rigid also has a painted bevel. So basically my question is with a 10 year son & an 85 lb Old English sheep dog - which of the two would you choose? (Going in living room & dining room). Thank you so much ahead of time!

Thank you SO much for your response! I guess it’s just so difficult for me because this whole time I’ve heard “SPC” “SPC”. I just got done taking a hammer to a sample of each- and while the WPC does dent easier it still takes a pretty good swing - and hitting the side of the hammer off the floor - to get either sample to dent. Hopefully we won’t be dumping hammers all over the floor any time soon 😂 thanks again 🙏🏻

Adura Max is my choice. It is durable and will be plenty good for your situation. I only recommend using rigid in situations where climate control is seasonal. Like cabins and 3 season porches. Anywhere that you might turn the heat off in the winter. WPC is typically thicker and has a better feel when walked on, meaning it has a more solid sound and feel. You cannot go wrong with adura max.

I think smartcore's quality has gone down over the past few months. Back in October we had someone install them in our kitchen and I remember the box saying made in America. The ones we just purchased 2 days has a flimsy locking mechanism that chips away if you fiddle it too much. I looked on the box double checking that I purchased the same thing and these say made in China. Paid the same price for terrible quality. I'm taking it back tomorrow everyone please be aware.

Thanks for the great video. I installed LL Flooring's Dream Home 12mm Jamestown. First I must admit that the floor is very uneven (nothing I could do about that) so I used a thicker cork underlayment which helped with bumps. I love the product except the locking was hit and miss. With a little finessing it worked pretty well. The end result isn't great, but considering the obstacles on this project, it's pretty good.

Started installing Coretec today. On the second row, we noticed the edges began peeling up or chipping. Boxing it all back up and returning it tomorrow. Wishing we would have found this video before buying, but at least we noticed issues as soon as we did. This is my first time ever commenting on a video, but hopefully this helps others avoid wasting money.

Thank you for your help in ALL your videos. I installed laminate 8 yrs ago (from floor and decor) very decent! In just living area. I just need a change in color. We just purchased home decorators collection LVP to install ALL throughout. I want to lay it the same way but after watching you, I'm struggling to decide how to transition easily. I might have to lay it vertically like you do and start in a hallway.

We have LVT from Carpet one (Invincible H2O, manufactured by Karndean) on our main level. Had it professionally installed in 2015, but see some errors after watching your videos. It's held up well. Just bought NuCore and spouse will be installing upstairs. He watched the installers in 2015 and helped BIL install a few months ago.

Joe just started watching your videos had planned on hiring someone to do the install but think I will try to install myself now. Will be signing up for the premium once I close on my home.
