I don't know how to thank the great J.R.R. Tolkien for creating such an amazing world, and to Peter Jackson for having the passion to turn it into such fantastic movies, and to Howard Shore for composing such breathtaking soundtracks that literally take you directly to the middle earth. I don’t think Elijah Wood gets enough credit for showing just how evil, sinister, and manipulative the One Ring is. You can tell throughout the whole trilogy Frodo is constantly struggling (mentally and physically) against the Ring’s will with great difficulty, and is horrified he’s going to fail as his mission with Sam continues!

Well, everyone did a phenomenal job, there’s not one bland character in the entire trilogy. It’s a MASTERPIECE!!!

Exactly!! On the one hand, I feel like most people think Sam could have taken the ring the Mount Doom, but eventually, as good as he is, it would have taken hold of him. On the other hand, some people thing Sam wasn’t needed, if he would’ve been corrupted. But here is what I think: without Frodo, Sam would have been corrupted, and would have taken the ring for himself. Without Sam, Frodo would have failed in that he was to weak to do it himself, and also the movie would’ve ended with Frodo in Shelob’s belly.

I can't even describe how much this masterpiece means to me. I listen to it while reading, relaxing, studying, cooking... I even listened it while delivering my own masterpiece two weeks ago, our firstborn, son, took 15 hours and this soundtrack was playing there the whole time. It gave me hope, strength and comfort. The very tippy end of The Grey Havens at 3:34:03 brings me to tears because it reminds me of my dad. He died early Christmas morning, 2003 the day after I saw Return of the King. I played "Into the West" at his funeral to see him off.

It's hard to imagine, how a composer could nail a soundtrack such as this. LOTR sound track is what defines beauty and really defined the movie. 30 original scores? All just as beautiful as the next. In 2 weeks it will be exactly 20 years since Return of the King celebrated its world premiere. It's amazing. I saw all the movies at least twice in the cinema back then and in 2003 also the triple feature at the end. Best cinema experience ever. Great times back then and great memories. <3

It's insane how many memorable melodies Howard Shore managed to compose within this film trilogy. Most movies can be happy when they have one song that people will recognise. But for LOTR? Probably the greatest soundtrack over composed. I mean, there are many great composers. My favorite is Danny Elfman, even. But this soundtrack... It is the only one I can think of that you can hit play, listen to all three hours and forty minutes and just enjoy it as much as (if not more than) the movies themselves. None of it is filler. None of it exists to merely be "background." It's all an opera that you can just sit and enjoy.

I wish I could experience the trilogy for the first time again. I saw all three movies in the cinema in their launch week in my country, and tickets were oversold so much that you had people sitting on the stairs rewatching it.

Nick Hal damn my art teacher only offered to have me feel the “sculpture” in their pantaloons i was confused as i thought ‘why would they make a sculpture of a breadstick’ but then it wasn’t until years later that i realized what had happened was i accidentally reached into their lunchbag and they had pulled out a sculpture from their pocket of a small rodent. Really detailed it was.

It's been over 20 years since I first fell in love with this soundtrack, and I have yet to hear one better. I've heard some great ones over the years but imho this is simply the greatest movie music soundtrack of all time. Just listening to it you get much of the experience of watching the movie all over again. Brilliant.

35:58 I love that nearly noir almost sounding chord to this with the trills. Its so mysterious and reminds me of the opening to sound of music with the hill (quite similar to the over head shot of them). Absolutely goosebumps, how it plays the theme in suspense, showing the long journey ahead in pure mystery, and then the perfect blast of the melody. Deserves an award alone.

Same for me ....These days we have some cinema re-releases of the trilogy in 4 big cities in the Czech Republic. I have bought tickets for all three movies. I really wanted my son who is now almost 13 years old to watch them on a big screen (I have never let him watch the films before on TV or DVD). He is totally enchanted and cannot understand the movies came out 20 years ago....(Maybe, he won't see anything better either, judging by the garbage that's coming out.).... I would be happy if he also reads the books one day....

I think the only time we're ever going to see another movie, let alone trilogy like this, is when some rich bastard in 2045 who grew up on the movies has a mid life crisis and does everything in their power to cite the source material before anything else.

@Brandie Britt I used to love Star Wars. I still love the George Lucas films. Lucas' 6 films are wonderfully written (story-wise, not so much script-wise), but they still aren't Tolkien. Those films as a whole cannot compare to Jackson's LotR trilogy. Not a chance. To agree with your point - the music, the makeup, the script, the casting, the acting, the practical effects shot with miniatures, the massive scope, the timeless story, etc. are almost impossible to surpass.

I feel like quality filmmaking began to die in the early 2000s and has been on a steady but rapid decline as a medium ever since. It isn't an artform anymore. Now all we get is endlessly regurgitated corporate bullshit engineered to tap into the viewer's nostalgia, appeal to the widest possible audience, and maximize ROI. Gone are the stories and the storytellers of old.
