So many commenters seem blissfully unaware that the tempo Chopin indicated for this piece is actually (despite the "Lento Sostenuto") incredibly fast: 50bpm in half-measure. Pollini is virtually the only pianist who actually plays it approaching the tempo Chopin wrote (even then he's quite a bit slower), so any criticisms of this being too fast, take it up with Fred...

Gerbil Jim Several pupils of Chopin said that he played fast. But so fast for a lento sostenuto it leaves perplexed. At 50 the dotted quarter note and for 77 measures of this piece (if we do not take into account the ritenuto of the measure 25 and by playing without rubato) it leads to a duration of 3 min and 5 s! Even Pollini is too slow here (He is rather 35). But yes, Chopin indicated this tempo. However this nocturne is so magical with a much slower tempo.

It is rather odd. We may never know what Chopin was thinking, whether he made a mistake or something. I don't believe in always adhering to the composer's written score but with this nocturne I do think it ought to be played quicker than how most people tend to interpret it.

Pollini is the best, when it comes to respecting the score, the intended melody of the composer He is not overwhelming the audience with his own interpretation, like other pianists. Many people will call his music boring, but it is just almost played plain neutral. His level of chrisp melody will never be challenged by anyone. If you want an extravagant interpretation, you are listening to the wrong interpreter.

I like his piano performances and interpretations better than everyone else. I love how wise and talented he is. He knows what needs to be done all along. his music makes sense, it's real; not just playing notes and shoving dynamics heartlessly. I just heard of him a couple of days ago! On YouTube! I didn't even know who he was. I still don't, I need to research this guy.
I heard Etude op. 10 n°4 in C sharp minor on YouTube and I LOVED it, then wondered who played it, and it said "Polini" so I was wondering what else he played, and came here to this one, which I loved as well. That guy is a genius in interpreting music, I don't even need to hear more pieces to figure that out.

In questa versione Pollini "sente" di piu' secondo me quello che sta suonando grazie anche all'esperienza di tutta una vita.Qui si slancia di piu',c'e' piu' passione,piu' profondita',e' piu' "vissuto" insomma.Questo notturno e' un capolavoro assoluto ,ritorna diverse volte il travaglio interiore di Chopin e poi di nuovo la pace come se Egli cercasse di acquietarlo ma tornasse sempre a galla.Un livello di poesia musicale straordinario.

Chopin's own mm notation was dotted quarter = 50, and Pollini is taking it a bit slower than that, around 42, so this is actually quite close to Chopin's own tempo indication. It is interesting like this - Pollini sounds marvelous as always and I think this is a wonderful heartfelt interpretation - shorn of manipulative kitsch.

Pollini is playing the Nocturnes _exactly as they were written_, without the melancholy, frilly, romantic embellishment that has been interjected by so many. Arrau and others are famous for the latter, and that's what most people are used to hearing. On first hearing, Pollini's interpretation can be jarring, but once I gave these interpretations a second and third listen, I see them for the genius that Pollini is, and that Chopin intended with this music. BRILLIANT!

This is the great Pollini. This is how he felt like playing it in this performance. Maybe that is how he felt this day. It is note perfect, as far as I can tell. We can all enjoy this master, even if it didnt capture us as much as someone else's performance. He is still one of the absolute best. Ever.

Pollini is my favourite for Chopin, I think. He allows the beauty of the original music to come through- his interpretation is quite subtle. I hate when one is distracted in the middle of a piece by the extreme and dramatic interpretation. Pollini seems to get the balance right, with a lot of emotion but not overdoing it. This is just gentle and lovely, and I could listen to it over and over and over.

I've gotta say. The first time I saw this I didn't think much of it. But now I just sat here and listened to what he was saying instead of thinking about the tempo and I can't deny this is an incredibly expressive performance. My God it just flows. This is now my favorite performance of the piece.

I love Pollini, especially in short pieces. His Chopin etudes, together with Perahia's, rank among the highest ever recorded. About this celestial nocturne, Dinu Lipatti's reading has no comparison with anybody, including this decent effort from Pollini.

Pollini has been around for along time. He's recorded an amazing large & varied amount of repetoire. He's not an overly demonstrative pianist. He just walks on stage, takes an obligatory bow and plays beautifully. Thats whats so cool about him. He lets the music do the talking.

We must appreciate each performance as an individual interpretation. If every single pianist strived to play the "correct" performance of a piece, with the "right" speed and dynamics, there wouldn't be any reason to listen to these masterpieces anymore simply because every performance would be identical! Even if an interpretation does not suit your personal tastes, please appreciate the musician for trying something different.

One of the things I love best about live performance is how the music is interpreted by the performer. There's no room for edits. Regardless of the prescribed tempo markings or what the precedent is, this was a fabulous interpretation full of emotion and skill. Instead of spending so much effort on being critical, why not concentrate on what you liked?

I am always amazed at the genius of being able to come up with such a beautiful and intricate and delicate composition, and then the genius of being able to materialize such sounds, it blows my mind every time. Oh Mo. You are the best of the rest. You changed my whole life when I heard you play the "Appassionata" in LA. In the audience was another person I did not know. Got to know that person months later. We realized we were there at the same time when your playing made us all see pink & green feathers fly down from the sky. No, we were not drunk. It was the music. Great interpretation of this Nocturne - where most other pianists linger unecessarily, Pollini brings out the more restless and unsettled aspects of this piece.

I actually think the speed of this piece was perfect. Most performances I listen to are slower and before I started analyzing the piece, I favored a slower performance. Now that I've done my analysis research paper on this piece, this recording is actually my favorite, because of the way Pollini speeds up tempos at sections that are leading up to something. LIke his chromatic figures. A great example of how Well Pollini does this is from 2:25 up 2:37 where he slows down to the resolution.

There's a difference between the composer playing it and someone else playing it.. The composers usually understate things during their playing while interpreters take subtle points and elaborate them to the public.. And there's no doubt this piece sounds delightful when played slowly...

He doesn't take the liberties of Paderewski or Horowitz or even Rachmaninoff, but he still has a clear, musical idea, whereas so many modernists manage to play melodies and voice things perfectly and somehow not achieve a singing, musical phrase.
