Herrmann is often criticized as a poor conductor in his later years. Though I am a staunch fan of all things Herrmann, even I will admit that some of his later recordings in the mid-1970s (of other composers' works as well as his own) seem to border on lugubrious. THE IMPRESSIONISTS LP (1971), from which this performance was taken is NOT was of those cases. I find this one of the most ethereal performances of this piece I've ever ever heard. The Satie GYMNOPEDIES pieces, also recorded for this LP, are equally exquisite.

My absolute favorite recorded performance of this piece.

@Jim Doherty Thanks for the info. To be honest, i have only ever heard this piece of music in adverts & tv & always wondered who it was. So when i heard it on the tv the other night i instantly shasamed it & it brought me here. I look forward to listening to more of his work.
