Oh Come All Ye Faithful
Londonderry Singers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, come ye
O come ye to Bethlehem
Come and behold him
Born the King of angels
O come, let us adore him
Christ the Lord

God of God
Light of light
Lo, he abhors
Not the virgin's womb
Very God
Begotten not created
O come, let us adore him
Christ the Lord

Sing, choirs of angels
Sing in exultation
Sing, all ye citizens
Of heaven above
Glory to God
In the highest

O come
Let us adore him
Christ the Lord

See how the shepherds
Summoned to his cradle
Leaving their flocks
Draw nigh with lowly fear
We too will thither bend
Our joyful footsteps
O come, let us adore him
Christ the Lord

Yea, Lord, we greet thee
Born this happy morning
Jesus
To thee be glory given
Word of the Father
Now in flesh appearing
O come

Let us adore him
Christ the Lord

Overall Meaning

The first verse of "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" is an invitation to come to Bethlehem and witness the birth of the King of Angels. It is a call to worship Him, the Christ the Lord. The second verse declares the divinity of Jesus, very God, begotten not created. It is an important theological statement that Jesus is not just a prophet or a teacher, but a divine being who was not created, but begotten of the Father. The lyricist also speaks of Jesus' birth through the virgin Mary, referring to the fulfillment of Old Testament prophesies.

The third verse is an invitation to sing in exultation with the choirs of angels, as the joy of His birth is announced in heaven. It calls upon all the citizens of heaven to give glory to God in the highest. The fourth verse is the story of the shepherds who were summoned to the cradle where Jesus lay. They leave their flocks to witness this divine miracle, and the lyric calls on us to join them in bending our joyful footsteps to witness the miracle of His birth. The final verse is a declaration of greeting to Jesus, who was born on that happy morning. It ends with the same invitation to worship Him, the Christ the Lord.
