Authorship of Our Lives
Lonely Robot Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I guess you're running out
I know I'm running out, of lines to say
As if it even matters
The planet parasite
Devours all it can
And where is the regret or reason?

Sing on sing on
You know it doesn't have to be this way
Come on come on
We will find light in the end
So goodbye to all the past
I will not give up on this today
Sing on sing on sing on

I should have bit my tongue
I should have shut my mouth
But where on earth's the use in lying?
This was a paradise
It's only borrowed time
So tell me where's the point in trying?

In the light of the dying sun
In the night of the longest knives
We are writing a sad demise
In the authorship of our lives
If a lesson has passed us by
Every history repeats itself
We are living beyond the lies
In the authorship of our lives

Sing on sing on
You know it doesn't have to be this way
Come on come on
We will find light in the end
So goodbye to all the past
I will not give up on this today
Sing on sing on sing on

In the light of the dying sun
In the night of the longest knives
We are writing a sad demise
In the authorship of our lives

In the light of the dying sun
In the night of the longest knives
We are writing a sad demise
In the authorship of our lives
If a lesson has passed us by
Every history repeats itself
We are living beyond the lies
In the authorship of our lives

Overall Meaning

The song "Authorship of Our Lives" is a commentary on the seemingly inevitable decline and destruction of society. The first verse acknowledges that the singer and the rest of humanity are running out of things to say or do to prevent the end from approaching. The metaphor of the "planet parasite" that devours everything it can reflects the idea that humans have exploited the planet and its resources to the point of crisis, but there seems to be no regret or recognition of what has been lost.

The chorus encourages the listener to keep singing and striving for something better, even if it appears hopeless. There is hope in "finding light in the end" and moving forward from past mistakes. The second verse reflects on the singer's regret for not speaking up earlier to prevent the current situation, but questions the usefulness of action at this point. The bridge repeats the metaphor of a dying sun and the inevitability of repeating history's mistakes, but emphasizes the importance of living authentically and taking control of the story rather than being passive participants.

Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of despair at the state of society and the environment, but also encourage listeners to keep trying to make a positive change and take ownership of their lives.
