Icarus
Lonely Robot Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He never felt the difference when his mother said goodbye
There must have been a mystery in her eyes
You grow up fast, become a man
And then you have to form a plan
But don't pretend this ever was in sight
You chose to feel responsible for something in the sky
A sense of purpose not to be denied
You used to keep the child within
But somehow it got lost again
So was it fate or was it foolish pride

Fly towards the sun, keep communications on
We're thinking of you far away
Icarus my friend, we will see you at the end
So hold the course for brighter days

He chose to give his life to us, a calling for mankind
And if you search for him then you may find
A promise now in everyone
The embers of a dying sun
The distant glow he chose to reignite

Fly towards the sun, keep communications on
We're thinking of you far away
Icarus my friend, we will see you at the end
So hold the course for brighter days

Fly towards the sun, keep communications on
We're thinking of you far away
Icarus my friend, we will see you at the end
So hold the course for brighter days

Brighter days
Brighter days

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Icarus" by Lonely Robot speaks about a man who feels a sense of responsibility towards something that wasn't even in his control. The song starts with the man reminiscing about the time when his mother left him and how he never felt the difference in her goodbye. However, he feels there was some mystery in her eyes. As he grew up, he formed a plan as he became responsible for something in the sky. He believed in a sense of purpose which he couldn't deny. He had to let go of the child inside of him, and he wonders if it was fate or foolish pride that led him to his current state.

The chorus of the song speaks to the man as if he was Icarus, a Greek mythology figure who flew too close to the sun with wings made of feathers and wax. The chorus encourages him to fly towards the sun and keep communication on. Icarus is promised that his friends are thinking of him, and they will see him at the end so he should hold his course for brighter days. The man in the song chose to give his life to mankind and this act of heroism serves as a promise to everyone of brighter days to come. The embers of a dying sun are reignited with Icarus' sacrifice.

The song speaks of motivation and encouragement. The songwriters are saying to listeners that life can be challenging, but we must keep holding on and keep moving forward. The reference to Icarus is symbolic, as it's a story of risk-taking and not allowing one's faults to get in the way of reaching a goal. Icarus was too ambitious, and his wings made of feathers and wax were unable to withstand his flight's force towards the sun. The song is also about choice and the consequences of our actions. We must assess the risks and weigh them against our desires to achieve our aspirations. Ultimately, the "brighter days" are born from our efforts and sacrifices.
