Mr. Mom
Lonestar Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah
Lost my job, came home mad
Got a hug and a kiss and that's too bad
She said, "I can go to work until you find another job"
I thought I like the sound of that
Watch TV and take long naps
Go from a hard working dad to being Mr. Mom
Well, Pampers melt in a Maytag dryer
Crayons go up one drawer higher
Rewind Barney for the fifteenth time
Breakfast at six, naps at nine
There's bubblegum in the baby's hair
Sweet potatoes in my lazy chair
Been crazy all day long
And it's only Monday, Mr. mom

Football, soccer, and ballet
Squeeze in scouts and P-T-A
And there's that shopping list she left
That's seven pages long
How much smoke can one stove make?
The kids won't eat my charcoal cake
It's more than any man can take being Mr. Mom

Well, Pampers melt in a Maytag dryer
Crayons go up one drawer higher
Rewind Barney for the sixteenth time
Breakfast at six, naps at nine
There's bubblegum in the baby's hair
Sweet potatoes in my lazy chair
Been crazy all day long
And it's only Monday, Mr. mom

Before I fall in bed tonight
If the dog didn't eat the classifieds
I'm gonna look just one more time

'Cause Pampers melt in a Maytag dryer
Crayons go up one drawer higher
Rewind Barney for the eighteenth time
Breakfast at six, naps at nine
There's bubblegum in the baby's hair
Sweet potatoes in my lazy chair
Been crazy all day long
Oh, been crazy all day long
And it's only Monday, Mr. Mom

Oh Mr. Mom
Balancing check books, juggling bills
Thought there was nothing to it
Baby, now I know how you feel when
What I don't know is how you do it

Oh
Honey, you're my hero

Overall Meaning

The song "Mr. Mom" by Lonestar is a humorous commentary on the challenges and surprises faced by a man suddenly thrust into the role of stay-at-home dad. The song's narrator has lost his job and is struggling to adjust to the demands of household chores and child-rearing. The chorus repeats the refrain "Pampers melt in a Maytag dryer, crayons go up one drawer higher, rewind Barney for the fifteenth time," reinforcing the idea that the tasks of parenting can be thankless and repetitive. The singer also feels overwhelmed by the endless to-do list left by his wife, which includes everything from grocery shopping to managing the schedule of their children's activities.

Despite the humorous tone of the song, there is an underlying appreciation for the hard work of mothers who juggle the responsibilities of both working outside the home and managing the household. The song concludes with the admission that the singer now understands how his wife feels, and she is his hero for managing these tasks every day.

Overall, "Mr. Mom" is a playful commentary on the unexpected challenges of parenting and a tribute to the hard work of stay-at-home parents and working mothers alike.

This song describes my father perfectly as his role as a stay-at-home dad. He was always trotting my brothers and I out for meals, sports events, etc, while my mother worked as a registered nurse. Life was a struggle for us at times but we made it on top. I'd give anything to hear or see my daddy again. He passed away 2 years ago this past January 24.

Awww, sorry to hear about that, sweetheart.

You want to know what's so funny? Your story is almost exactly like mine. My dad was usually a stay-at home dad, and my mom also worked as a registered nurse. The only difference is that my dad was very good at what he did. It was still a struggle at times, though.

Too bad they ended up getting divorced later on in life. But at least they're both alive and well.

Undoubtedly one of the cutest videos and songs. Just a fun little song to commemorate all the Mom's who work so hard at multitasking and able to achieve it. Certainly better than us men. I've always said that. Thumbs up to all Moms. You rock! ❤
