As unwelcoming as MedSci was for me as well, I never entirely figured out why I still managed to somehow get around it and slowly, but surely and methodically advancing through its dark and highly oppressive corridors, literally one step at a time and save scumming like crazy specially when hacking, all the while it was having a constant toll on my senses and wearing me down by the minute every time I played, I absolutely remember the emotional side of it, beyond the actual experience itself. I can say I stood right at the crossroads between the two typical categories of people, my mind and intellect unwilling to quitting but the whole of my body telling my to just give up.

I guess being 16 at the time and at the height of my video-gaming passion (or passion at all, for pretty much everything) plus extreme attraction to anything cyber-ish played a part in overcoming what appeared to be tailored to the milimeter to reject me. It was the first time ever I played an FPS of that league, with so many additional mechanics, menus, and of course RPG elements, different paths and profile for your character and so on. Double it with that well-thought art direction specially geared at conveying some dark and intrusive sense of horror to the player, and you have a gem that will drive some of us to the fringes of straight up masochism.

I love every bit of it and really started to enjoy it when my character was upgraded past 50% of the chosen path with most stable weapons loaded with enough ammo, which meant suffering in an uphill battle for a good 10 hours until I was upped and familiarized enough with the whole thing.

Those hidden art terminal codes though. 14106 was it ? I mean, How to forget THIS ONE. Those FIFTY turns taken right past the missing ones right.

But as rewarding was the very act of finally beating this game, I guess I'll never have the energy, time and motivation pull that challenge anew in the future, bar a complete remake in the leagues of the first System Shock due this summer (that I never played to begin with, which helps). There are challenges you only have the strength to accomplish once. High School and Uni exams would be two other such examples for me :D

System Shock 2 is superior in gameplay but honestly Bioshock has the upper hand in originality, story and in a way even atmosphere. It was just the right combination of elements.
Yes many things were simplified and there’s not much exploration since the game is kinda railroaded but I’m glad that it ended up being that way or I fear that the general audience wouldn’t have given it a chance.
Besides, Plasmids are really fun to use and have both combat and environmental effects, so you can still play around with them.
One thing that sucks in Bioshock 1 is the hacking minigame, good thing that they made it more blended in the action for the sequel.

P.S. One thing that I would change about SS2 is to put a door in front of the bioreconstructor, like SS1 did. I understand that this game is more action than the prequel and having the chamber open lets you get back in the game right away, but when doing an Impossible run I found myself killed by a security robot, when I respawn… SURPRISE! The robot is right in front of the chamber and is camping me, soft locking the game since I can’t do anything but load a previous save.
It sucks really bad.
Same thing happened with some annelids.

Prey was probably my favorite game of 2017. That being said, I eventually picked up System Shock 2 to see where games like Prey (2017), and Bioshock took their inspiration. System Shock 2 was definitely not as easy to get into as the games previously mentioned but once I got past that, I found a really enjoyable game that had just about everything that made me fall in love with Prey (2017) with a personal highlight of the game for me being the Recreational Deck.

@pauloricardo-wn6ps

prey is like bootleg system shock 2

@Ragitsu

Initially, one wonders why Janice Polito has a sharp edge to her voice as she guides the protagonist through the Von Braun. On second (and subsequent) playthroughs, I cannot help but chuckle whenever SHODAN!Polito talks smack as rave music blares in Med-Sci.

@Torgo1969

Sometimes the mask slips!

@Ragitsu

@Torgo1969 The lady can't help herself.

@yamato6114

I noticed that too. The real Polito in the audio recordings has a slightly higher pitched voice, and she isn’t as monotonous

@georgsgrants9925

Actually meeting shodan is a plot twist in the sense that the knife is twisted even further. The game basically tells you “polito” isn’t who she says she is. But you know you have to continue and do as she says, and you can’t do anything about it

The fun thing about System Shock 2's Med Sci is that even though the huge monologue about what needs to be done is indeed a pretty long one, all it boils down to in gameplay is pretty simple: explore the map, see what you can do and then explore elsewhere for the key item to progress further. Just explore shit and see what you find. For the most part that is what the game progression boils down to. Since the main method of progression is that simple, it gives more room for the player to think about all of the systems the game is filled with, since the question in the end always ends up being: How does this help me progress?

@williamredding8953

Please fastidiously go through the entire game.

The Von Braun's got six decks, the Rickenbacker, Body of the Many, and Final Level can each count as a deck.
So at one hour per deck, that's a good 9 hour mini series.

I'd watch it.

@ThePlayingField

Well I'm glad you like it! Though given I don't have the greatest track record of consistent uploads I'm hesitant to focus on one game that much :P
