A few small things on this one:

-"Terri Brosius, a bandmate of one of the staff" Neither Eric Brosius nor Greg LoPiccolo actually worked at Looking Glass at that time, as I've spoken to both of them. They were doing contracting work at the start.

-Ken Levine didn't do design work at Looking Glass. He was entirely relegated to writing and scenarios for Dark Camelot, The Dark Project, and the Voyager game. It's probably where he does his best.

-Speaking of Dark Camelot and The Dark Project in the same voice isn't really accurate. Dark Camelot was abandoned for The Dark Project which was more fantasy based. One guy I talked to said part of the reason for this was, when they implemented the lighting system, they started to realize that the dynamic range actually lent itself to stealth play.

-One thing about staff shifting on Thief was that they had three producers: Vijay Lakshman, Warren Spector, and finally Greg LoPiccolo. The relationship with Eidos I always hear grumblings about, but they did allow for delays before drawing a hard line for Holiday '98.

Again, good focused overview of the period, even though there's a lot more to the stuff behind the curtain than just some lackluster selling games. I've been working to figure out more.

+Chris Chapman Thanks Chris! Pretty wild right? They even worked on two Madden games for EA if you can believe it. Sadly the first Madden game they worked on was one of their most financially successful games. Yeah apparently Ken Levine was heavily involved in writing the Voyager game as well, could have been pretty cool.

Wow I forgot all about Terra Nova. That was a great game.

Terra Nova: Task Force Centauri should get more love. I played it back in the day, and I play it still. It was the first game to release demo's that included new levels. The first one had one level, the second had two levels! It was the first game to have reflections in water, weather effects and AI teamwork. The story was interesting, but the FMV was put in purely because of Command and Conquer and Wing Commander, but was no less cringeworthy than those other games. It has amazing gameplay, and is truly the thinking man's shooter of the 90s! Please buy it and try it!

The seeds of Thief were already in Ultima underworld. Where sound radius and visibility (distance/line of sight based, not lighting based as in Thief, obviously) were added and stealth gameplay fell out automagically.

Thanks for the clarification. I try to do as much research as I can on these, but I wasn't there so nuances may have been missed.

From what I could tell as far as Looking Glass going under, some of their sequels to their later games plus most of their self-published games lost them a lot of money, and they were acquired by a company that decided to get out of the video game business later and pulled the plug, at least that's what Paul Neurath said in an interview much later.

Siltent Hill 1 on PSX had a similar dificulty setting, which separated combat from puzzles.

It was Silent Hill 2, wasn't it? Yeah that was pretty cool. I wish more games would incorporate that feature in them, as sometimes you want to have a different experience in a game than what others might.

So Looking Glass itself was to blame for the Underworld engine not being used for future Ultima games? They didn't want to make more dungeon games? Heck, they should have evolved the engine to support landscape rendering. They didn't leave the dungeon model, they just changed the genre. By the time they were ready for that, Richard Garriott was done with Ultima. Imagine if Ultima VIII and IX had been made with the continued evolution of the Underworld engine? What if Looking Glass and Origin made Ultima IX together?

Yes it's incredible to see that despite their outdated graphics and audio, in 2021 Thief I & II are still the top choice for immersive experience. Some guys even managed to play them in VR for more immersion.

Thanks! About halfway done with episode 3, and I'm definitely toning down the music for next episode. Sadly I can't replace the audio on the 1st and 2nd part without creating an entirely new video with ranking, etc.

Okay, thanks for letting me know. Tried playing with the volumes so that I could have as much music pumping in the background as possible while still able to hear the voiceover, but I guess I'll need to try more headsets for a happy medium.
