Caves
Loom Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How long will it take to finally cave in
When we've fallen to the bottom?
Consequence violently forced into our stomachs.

We too are vulnerable, we too are afraid,
But we can't hold on to despair or hide in these wretched caves.
When there is so much being to embrace...
So many movements to exchange.

And what will it take to finally get up
When we've fallen to the bottom?
Consequence violently forced out of our stomachs.

Find ourselves in rounded corners facing everything in shadow.

We shake and we shudder and run screaming to our caves.
When seeing leaves us there is no true escape.

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Loom's "Caves" deal with the inevitability of collapse or failure; the faltering point at which resistance gives way to gravity and everything falls apart. The song then delves deeper into finding the strength to face these moments of crisis, of facing our fears when we feel most vulnerable. The second verse sets up the idea that hiding in caves will not help us overcome our struggles, we must instead confront them head on. The lines "we too are vulnerable, we too are afraid" convey a sense of empathy with the listener, whilst also acknowledging that fear can't be used as an excuse to give up. The final line of this verse reveals the hope for better tomorrows: "...so many movements to exchange".

In the chorus, the question is asked: "What will it take to finally get up?" This question is simultaneously answered within the same line with "Consequence violently forced out of our stomachs". It seems that by facing the harsh reality of consequences, we are forced to move forward. The second half of the chorus reflects on a person's traumatized state: "Find ourselves in rounded corners facing everything in shadow. We shake and we shudder and run screaming to our caves". Running to the caves is a metaphor for escapism, and when someone is engulfed in fear, the path of least resistance seems like the safest route. However, the lines "When seeing leaves us there is no true escape" suggest that it's a momentary retreat, rather than a permanent one.

Overall, the song is about acknowledging the fact that failure is inevitable, but at the same time, we must not succumb to despair. It's only when we face our fears that we can truly move forward and embrace the world around us.
