Lonesome Dreams
Lord Huron Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Minor changes and grammar I land on an island coast
Where the only souls I see are ghosts
I run through a wooded isle
And I chase the sunlight mile after mile
And I feel like I know this place
As the tree line breaks into wide-open space
I stare at a bright red sun
Though I search all day, I never find anyone

I walk on a winding road
In the deep of the night, near the edge of the known
I pass by a moonlit lake
And a cold wind blows and my bones start to shake
And I feel I should know this place
As the road winds on into wide-open space
The wind plays a haunting tone
As I make my way through the night all alone

I been dreaming again of a lonesome world
Where I'm lost and I've got no friends
Just the rocks and the trees in my lonesome dreams
And a road that don't never end
I been dreaming again of a lonesome world
Where I'm lost and I'm on my own
What am I destined to be? It's a mystery baby
Just please don't leave me alone

I lie under starlit sky
And the seasons change in the blink of an eye
I watch as the planets turn
And the old stars die and the young stars burn
But I don't really know this place,
And it's lonesome here in the wide-open space

Can it be as real as it seems?
Maybe this time I won't wake from the dream

Overall Meaning

In Lord Huron's song Lonesome Dreams, the lyrics depict a dreamlike and mysterious journey through a deserted, ghost-like island where the only companionship found are the rocks, trees, and the elements of nature. The singer narrates their adventures on the island - running through the woods, following the sunlight, walking on winding roads in the deep of the night, passing by a moonlit lake, and staring at the sun. Despite the familiarity, the singer feels lonesome, lost and searching for something that is always just out of reach.

The lyrics give insights into the theme of loneliness and isolation, where the singer's only friends in the lonesome world are the "rocks and the trees" and the only road leads to nowhere. They look at the stars, ponder about change and the mystery of destiny.

Lonesome Dreams paints a vivid picture of the overwhelming beauty of nature juxtaposed with a sense of loneliness and confusion, and how in times of despair, nature becomes a comforting companion. The singer is on a journey to find a sense of purpose or direction, but they're left with more mysteries than answers.

"Lonesome Dreams" (Lyrics)

I land on an island coast
Where the only souls I see are ghosts
I run through the wooded isle
And chase the sunlight mile after mile

And I feel like I know this place
As a tree line breaks in a wide open space
I stare at a bright red sun
And search all day, never find anyone

I walk a winding road
In the deep of the night near the edge of the knoll
I pass by a moonlit lake
And a cold wind blows, and my bones start to shake

And I feel I should know this place
As a road winds on in a wide open space
The wind plays a haunting tune
As I make my way through the night all alone

I been dreaming again of a lonesome road
Where I'm lost and I've got no friends
Just the rocks and the trees
And my lonesome dreams
And a road that'll never end

I been dreaming again of a lonesome world
Where I'm lost and I'm on my own
Left my best in the beats on this trip, baby
Just please don't leave me alone

I lie under starlit sky
And the seasons change in the blink of an eye
I watch as the planets turn
And the old stars die and the young stars burn

But I don't really know this place
And it's lonesome here in a wide open space
Can it be as real as it seems?
Maybe this time I won't wake from the dream

I been dreaming again of a lonesome road
Where I'm lost and I've got no friends
Just the rocks and the trees
And my lonesome dreams
And a road that'll never end

I been dreaming again of a lonesome world
Where I'm lost and I'm on my own
Left my best in the beats on this trip, baby
Just please don't leave me alone

The songs that these guys make are those kind of songs that give you internal peace, the songs you blast while you're on your bike, biking in the dark, going no place specific while smoking a cigar. It's truly magical.

I tell a lot of friends and family about this band and I have yet to find a one who is as moved by Lord Huron's music as I am. I started to think that maybe I am going crazy and then I read the comments below of so many people who love this band like I do. It's like heroine (haven't tried it but you get my drift) to me. It's like sailing; the first time out on a boat, I was hooked. I share my passion for sailing with others but few get it. I think they are all nuts, but then again, maybe the great novelties of this life aren't to be shared with everyone. Maybe certain things touch us so deeply because that is how we were created and it's, frankly, what makes us unique. Lonesome Dreams is my absolute favorite album ever...

I remember hearing this song for the first time after I chose peace over friendships. At the time I dropped my group of friends and was determined to improve myself. This song in a way helped me feel comfortable in my loneliness. Now I have two close friends that are weighted in gold. Thank you Lord Huron, for making me feel seen and comforted.

This was my soundtrack in my headphones while I walked along the Monterey warf early early in the morning, with the cool air blowing in and nothing but faint lights to see where I was walking. Even now, I can feel that moment of a cold beach, and every time I introduce this album to someone, I tell them it's like listening to the moment of being on a cold beach pondering life.
