Mona Lisa
Lord Luther Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa men have named you
You're so like the lady with the mystic smile
Is it only cause you're lonely they have blamed you
For that Mona Lisa strangeness in your smile
Do you smile to tempt a lover Mona Lisa?
Or is this your way to hide a broken heart?
Many dreams have been brought to your doorstep
They just lie there, and they die there
Are you warm, are you real Mona Lisa?
Or just a cold and lonely, lovely work of art.

Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa.

Overall Meaning

Lord Luther's song "Mona Lisa" is a heartfelt query into the mind and soul of the enigmatic and elusive painting by Leonardo da Vinci. In the first verse, the singer ponders the reason why people have given a name to this painting, and why it resembles a lady with a mysterious smile. He wonders if the reason behind naming the painting after a woman is due to the fact that the painting itself looks lonely or mournful. The phrase "that Mona Lisa strangeness in your smile" implies that there is something in the painting that sparks mystery, and that people try to assign meaning to it - whether it's happiness or sadness.

In the second verse, the singer asks what the smile is meant for. Is it to tempt a lover, or is it meant to hide a broken heart? He then brings up the idea that many people have dreams of talking to Mona Lisa or being near her, but they don't come to fruition. These dreams are just brought to her doorstep and never come to be. The final question the singer poses is whether Mona Lisa is a real, warm person or simply a cold, lonely piece of artwork, as well as a stunningly beautiful one.

Overall, Lord Luther's song "Mona Lisa" delves into the constant curiosity that people have with the artwork, the woman within the painting, and the artist behind it. The questions the singer asks are deep and thought-provoking, making us think about the painting in a different way, even though it has already become a cultural icon.

What surprises me is Trevor's statement that the Mona Lisa was finished. Da Vinci never finished the painting, even though he was already paid for it. He hauled it around with him for the rest of his life, making tweaks. Frankly, it wouldn't surprise me if there WERE a second one, given Da Vinci's perfectionist attitude. He probably thought, "This still isn't right. Let's try it again."

Kalevi Urpilainen without the ability to see the painting up close you can't judge technique as a matter of fact it just looks like one has aged more than the other or been exposed to more elements. That being said I am by no means saying it is the same painter. As a matter of fact I think I would be more interested to hear that it was a different artist who just happened to be from the same era and pick the same or similar focal point. perhaps this type of person was considered an ideal beauty and they just look very similar. they did have a way of trying to make faces look somewhat the same back then regardless of how the original person looked. Not entirely but to a point. it would be a lovely treat to get to see them up close and compare paint Strokes!!

If anyone has access to an old science fiction book "The Cosmic Kaleidoscope" by Bob Shaw, now is the time to read the short story "The Giaconda caper" ;-)
