Elwood Blues I was just thinking about this the other day and why exactly Moria is the most compelling part of the entire trilogy. Everything between Gandalf's "long dark of Moria" line and the the Fellowship mourning his death after staving off the Balrog... I don't think a movie has ever had me so invested before or immersed in its story. This is truly a beautiful piece of film.

If you're talking about the movies, then Thorin was an abusive asshole garbage king who was selfish till the end and never redeemed himself. Explains why Gandalf didn't give a fuck when he died and casually lights his pipe. And Bilbo smiles at him because he is over that asshole's pathetic death too. I bet everyone else was also happier that they got rid of Thorin.

In the book, Thorin became a true leader and hero in Battle of Five Armies who United the races together. Everyone saw how heroic he was. Thorin was the ultimate badass in Battle of Five Armies. And he redeemed himself. Bilbo was genuinely heartbroken by his death. He cried and cried for his friend. Even Elvenking and Bard mourned for Thorin and forgave his mistakes.

Imagine how different Moria(Khazad-Dum) was before the balrog was unleashed. A thriving well-lit city inhabited by thousands of Dwarves, the sound of hammers ringing in the mines, every hall bustling with daily activity, voices, sights, sounds, and aromas, the occasional drunken scuffle, armed soldiers on patrol in the streets, parents and their children, fathers doing business, mothers shopping, youngsters running about. The Twenty-First Hall was supposedly a massive marketplace for travelers, traders and merchants, and probably some illegal activity too. Those must have been the days.

Imagine the implications of that quote. It's not referring to the Balrog alone, which means there are others, as of yet unknown horrors deep into the nethers of the planet. This is fascinating and horrifying at the same time.
In one of the books there is also this quote from Gandalf: "Far, far below the deepest delving of the Dwarves, the world is gnawed by nameless things. Even Sauron knows them not. They are older than he. Now, I have walked there, but I will bring no report to darken the light of day".

The song of creation was sung from the Timeless Halls outside time itself, and only after creation and the corruption of Melkor's discordance did the Ainur enter Arda.

From that point of view Sauron did not exist in Arda or indeed in time itself until after the effects of the discordance had been felt in Arda, and thus there are creations which predate even the Ainur as beings in time.

Whenever I hear about the gift, I remember how deep the friendship and admiration of the dwarfs went. At some point in the war of the ring, a messanger of Mordor came to the Erebor. He offered the dwarves peace and even one of the rings they had lost, if they would give him intel on Bilbo. The dwarves, even though they desperatly wanted their ring back, refused. They wouldn't betray their hero.

When FOTR first came out, I thought Gandalf mentioning Thorin was a good reference to the larger world of the books. The subsequent performance of Richard Armitage really ties these separate adventures together into a narrative arc. And still a sense of a larger world.

It makes you wonder what are the beings that are still hidden from even the eyes of Sauro himself, that few people like Gandalf knew about. It really gives you the creeps. Wow. There's SOOO much they cut from the film!!! This part really gives a nice balance to the earlier dark/scary attack from that thing in the water. It lets us in on more lore about dwarves, and really shows the intellect/humility of Pippin and Merry. I like how Pippin {gently} holds Merry back from falling down into the mine/shiny/thing, and Merry catches Pippin, when he trips up the steps <3 <3 <3

The Idea that Moria (and the Goblin tunnels from the Hobbit) are the Blue print for modern "dungeon crawls" is 100% true. Like many other aspects of D&D Its based on J.R.R.T's literature. Then, his share of the Erebor treasure was 0.1%, which is still a substantial sum, given how ridiculously over the top big that treasure was. Brings back a bit of sad memories knowing that Thorin as well as Fili and Kili have been dead for a little more than a century for about a century since it indeed has been for so long. :( who knows what would have happened had they been alive? Would one of them have perhaps aided them in the quest for defeating the ring? It would have been interesting to consider that. Well, the Lonely Mountain is on the other side of Mirkwood, so it would have taken them WAAAY longer to get to Rivendell. Still, it would have been nice :/

Gosh, I think the entrance to the Moria is funny! First, Gandalf, the antient divine being with very great wisdom and authority, couldn't open Durin's Doors. The team spent hours nearby loafing around. Thanks to Frodo they passed the Doors and continued their journey. Then Gandalf lost the way or simply forgot it. The Fellowship again sitting and wasting time in the middle.
I love this. Even though Gandalf is powerful, he is not all-mighty.

The Balrog was near the Bridge of Khazad-Dum, which is like, right next to the East Gate of Moria. They were almost out when the Balrog sprung out at them.

Who's here after episode 2 of Rings of Power? Man I love what Amazon has done to Khazad dum in its prime. So beautiful. Makes this scene even more depressing now knowing how great this Kingdom was . Until the digging in the wrong spot happens ......
Man loved the music was so alive in that episode too. I love when prequels just somehow make the sequels even more much of a emotional roller coaster when binging them. I can't wait to see how this tv show pans out with all 5 seasons . So far with the first 2 episodes, I feel like I definitely will end up binging all 5 seasons along with the extended editions of the Hobbit and LOTR trilogies and man I can't to be able to do that . Can't believe we're gonna have more Middle Earth to watch . And alot of in depth details too bout the second age too ( with some small First Age tidbits as well which is amazing) can't wait to see how these episodes turn out for season 1 . The fact we'll finally be most likely seeing Numenor for the first time on screens in episode 3, I'm so hyped

So in order to get into a dwarf mine they had to speak Elvish.
They identified the arrow as from a goblin, but then said there are worse things than orcs in the deep. Surely they would be worried about running into goblins.
Wants to go unnoticed, even after the sea creature destroyed the entrance bringing the roof down (noisily) and illuminates the whole mine shaft.

If it was a four day journey towards the other side then how did they get there so quickly after running from the Balrog? It literally took them like ten minutes.

I just did some math because of cuoristiy. Gandalf said it take 4 days to travle through Moria from this entrance to the other side. The normal Human walking speed is around 5Km per hour. Not considering weight, stealth (walking slower to not make noise), obstacles (like corssways or damaged bridges etc.) and terrain (which obviously is a huge factor in Moria) and that their are hobbits and and Gandalf with them. Assuming they would march 8 hours a day which is resonable and normal for a days march. They can travel around 40kms a day. And the entire way is around 160 kms. And thats just from one end to the other. If you square that it is 25.600km2 Big ! Moria is absoulutly fcking huge Oo.
