Big Star
Lorde Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everyone knows that you're too good for me, don't they?
I'm a cheater, I lie and I'm shy
But you like to say hello to total strangers
Shivering pines and walls of color
I can't believe I used to stay inside

But every perfect summer's got to say goodnight
Now I watch you run through the amber light
I used to love the party, now I'm not alright
Drinking in the dark, take me home tonight

Baby, you're a big star
You're a big star
Want to take your picture

I toss up if it's worth it now, every time I get on a plane
I've got so much to tell you and not enough time to do it in

But every perfect summer's gotta take its flight
I'll still watch you run through the winter light
I used to love the party now I'm not alright
Hope the honeybees make it home tonight

Baby, you're a big star
You're a big star
Want to take your picture
'Til I die

'Til I die
'Til I die

Overall Meaning

In "Big Star," Lorde sings about her unworthiness in the eyes of a certain someone, who she perceives as too good for her because she is a cheater and a liar. This person, however, has a strange affection for strangers which the singer would never normally associate with. She then talks how she used to be someone who would never go out and just stay in indoors, but now, seeing this person, makes her want to be outside, facing the shivering pines and walls of color- something that she could not believe she once used to do. Despite her feelings of inadequacy, Lorde cannot resist this person, and the singer describes her as a big star, someone she wants to take a picture of until she dies.

Lorde also alludes to how every perfect summer must take its flight and come to an end, and she watches as her love interest runs through the amber and winter light, yearning to share everything with them but never quite having enough time to do so. She notes how she used to love parties but does not anymore, maybe because of the guilt of being someone who is difficult to love, but also because of the simple fact that this person is not with her at the party. Throughout the song, Lorde paints a picture of someone who is haunted by the guilt of not being good enough for someone she thinks is the epitome of perfection.

Liability: “Every perfect summer’s eating me alive”

Big Star: “Every perfect summer’s gotta say goodnight/Every perfect summer’s gotta take its flight”

Green Light: “I’m waiting for it, that green light, I want it”

Big Star: “watch you run through that amber light”

This song is such a heartfelt tribute to Pearl and a meaningful answer to Melodrama. The entire first pre-chorus is the healing for Melo’s yearning, which I guess Pearl and Pearl’s passing, in a way, brought to Ella.
