Lorde expressed interest in performing at local venues in her early teens. She signed with Universal Music Group (UMG) in 2009 and collaborated with producer Joel Little in 2011 to start recording music. Their first effort, an EP titled The Love Club, was self-released in 2012 for free download on SoundCloud before UMG's commercial release in 2013. The EP's international chart-topping single "Royals" helped raise Lorde to prominence. Her debut studio album Pure Heroine was released that same year to critical and commercial success. The following year, Lorde curated the soundtrack for the 2014 film The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and recorded several tracks, including the single "Yellow Flicker Beat".
Lorde's second studio album Melodrama (2017) received widespread critical acclaim and debuted atop the US Billboard 200. For her third studio album, Solar Power (2021), she ventured into indie folk and psychedelic styles. The album reached number one in Australia and New Zealand and charted inside the top-10 in numerous countries, although it polarised music critics and fans alike.
Lorde's accolades include two Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards, and a Golden Globe nomination. She appeared in Time's list of the most influential teenagers in 2013 and 2014, and the 2014 edition of Forbes 30 Under 30. In addition to her solo work, she has co-written songs for other artists, including Broods and Bleachers. As of June 2017, Lorde has sold over five million albums worldwide.
Buzzcut Season

It kissed your scalp and caressed your brain
Well you laughed, baby it's okay
It's buzz cut season anyway
(Well you laughed, baby it's okay)
Explosions on TV, and all the girls with heads inside a dream
So now we live beside the pool, where everything is good
We ride the bus with the knees pulled in
People should see how we're living
(We ride the bus with the knees pulled in)
Shut my eyes to the song that plays
Sometimes this has a hot, sweet taste
(Shut my eyes to the song that plays)
The men up on the news, they try to tell us all that we will lose
But it's so easy in this blue, where everything is good
And I'll never go home again (place the call, feel it start)
Favorite friend (and nothing's wrong when nothing's true)
I live in a hologram with you
Where all the things that we do for fun (and I'll breathe, and it goes)
Play along (make-believe it's hyper real)
But I live in a hologram with you
Cola with the burnt-out taste
I'm the one you tell your fears to
There'll never be enough of us
Explosions on TV, and all the girls with heads inside a dream
So now we live beside the pool, where everything is good
And I'll never go home again (place the call, feel it start)
Favorite friend (and nothing's wrong when nothing's true)
I live in a hologram with you
Where all the things that we do for fun (and I'll breathe, and it goes)
Play along (make-believe it's hyper real)
But I live in a hologram with you
The lyrics of Lorde's "Buzzcut Season" depict the contrast between the reality of the world and the surreal existence people create to escape it. The song starts with a chilling image of someone's hair catching fire, but instead of being alarmed, they laugh it off because "it's buzz cut season anyway." This represents a detachment from reality, an acceptance of the chaos around them, and a decision to live in the moment, experiencing life freely without the hang-ups of society.
The chorus talks about the otherworldliness of their existence, where they're surrounded by entertainment and diversion (explosions on TV, girls with heads inside a dream). They feel like they're living in a pool where everything is good. The bus ride they take with knees pulled in shows their detachment and self-containment, living in their own invented world. And they shut their eyes to the song that plays because it gives them a sense of pleasure, a hot, sweet taste that they savor.
The hologram they live in represents a false existence, full of glamor and luxury. They're aware of the world's problems and the lies they're told, but they still value their time spent doing fun things, pretend it's hyper-real, and enjoy it with their favorite friend. Lorde's "Buzzcut Season" thus speaks to the generational feeling of disillusionment, escapism, and the desire for togetherness that many people feel in today's world.
