California
Lorde Lyrics

Once upon a time in Hollywood when Carole called my name
I stood up, the room exploded
And I knew that's it, I'll never be the same
That's when the door swung open
And a voice said, "We're glad you came"

Now I've spent thousands on you darling
All the hotels and the jets
And I'd pay it all again
To have your golden body back in my bed
But I don't miss the poison arrows
Aimed directly at my head

Goodbye to all the bottles, all the models
Bye to the clouds in the skies that all hold no rain-
(Don't want that California love)
(Don't want that California love)
(Don't want that California love)

Once upon a time the Canyon Store was where my world began
All that mystery and beauty
Gleaned from desert flowers and gifted children
But it got hard to grow up with your cool hand around my neck

Now in my hotel, we're sunbathing
My girlfriends, and my baby
But every time I smell tequila
The garden grows up in my mind again

Goodbye to all the bottles, all the models
Bye to the kids in the lines for the new Supreme-
(Don't want that California love)
(Don't want that California love)
(Don't want that California love)
(Don't want that California love)
(Don't want that California love)
(Don't want that California love)

It's just a dream
It's just a dream

It's all just a dream
I wanna wake up, I wanna wake up

Overall Meaning

The song "California" by Lorde is a reflective piece that details the singer's experiences in Los Angeles, once known as the land of opportunity but has now caused a feeling of disillusionment for her. The song begins with an acknowledgment of her entry into the industry, stemming from her meeting with Carole, which led to a sudden onstage performance. The moment was intense and even life-changing, as the singer knew that she would never be the same again. This experience led to more significant things, like sharing moments with people who matter to her, including her lovers, girlfriends, and child. However, Lorde also acknowledges that all of these moments have a dark side, which she describes through her negative experiences in Hollywood. The 'poison arrows,' a metaphor for the toxicity and negativity Lorde has faced, loom over her, showing how recent events have left a bad taste in her mouth.

The second verse speaks about the Canyon store where she has had many beautiful experiences. The beauty of the desert flowers and gifted children within that environment shaped her but also reveals how she's now perceived as childish and struggling to find her identity around the people she holds closest to her. Though in certain moments, there's an idea of being in control and power "with your cool hands around my neck" but it's become more challenging to maintain it as time progressed. The reference to tequila invoking memories of her experiences in LA shows that not only has the place left a bad taste in her mouth, but it's seeped into her memories as well, hence the mention of the flowers growing around her mind.

Overall, the song speaks to Lorde's disillusionment with the L.A. life and acknowledging that the image of the place is different from the reality. The mention of excess drinking and relationships with people, the extravagance, and the toxic feeling that she can't escape impose on the situation. The chorus repeats throughout, arguing that she doesn't want to experience any of that California love, which once seemed so enticing, as it is not comprehensive to her present reality.

My favorite line is “byes to the clouds in the skies that all hold no rain”. To me it’s a metaphor for how empty and vain fame and California is to her, all look and no substance. Such a brilliant image! I love this album so much!

@thisshowisover4583

It might refer to air pollution too... with a similar meaning.

@melsay.799

i think she refers to the superficial images everyone in LA holds, and it has of course no substance, also referring to the fact that it never rains, literally because of the actual wether but here, the superficial and shallow clouds that never provide rain.. as a metaphor for "realness"

@MarroHalliwell

holly shit, you are so right
