Dominoes
Lorde Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
With Uma Thurman's mother
Just outside of Woodstock
Now you're watering all the flowers
You planted with your new girlfriend
Outside on the rooftop
Just another phase you're rushing on through
Fifty gleaming chances in a row
And I watch you flick them down like dominoes
Must feel good being Mr. Start Again
I know
Know a girl who knows a
Another girl who knows the woman that you hurt
It's strange to see you smoking marijuana
You used to do the most cocaine
Of anyone I'd ever met
Just another phase you're shooting on through
The whole world changes right around you
You get fifty gleaming chances in a row
And I watch you flick them down like dominoes
Must feel good being Mr. Start Again
Yeah, it must feel good being Mr. Start Again
Don't get up
Yeah, it must feel good being Mr. Start Again
In "Dominoes", Lorde is describing an ex-lover who is going through a series of transformative experiences. She hears that he is doing yoga with Uma Thurman's mother just outside of Woodstock, and has a new girlfriend with whom he is watering the flowers they planted together on the rooftop. Despite these positive changes, Lorde feels a sense of detachment from him, as she watches him quickly move on from one phase to another, trying out new things and finding success with each one. She mentions that he used to do a lot of cocaine, but now he smokes marijuana. The song is filled with a mixture of admiration, disconnect, and a touch of sarcasm, as Lorde notes how it must feel good to be able to start over and over again without looking back.

Solar Power is definitely an album to grow with. It's perfect in its details and even more lovable when you know all the past history and work of Lorde. Just like legos, that record fits perfectly to Pure Heroine and Melodrama narrative and it's so beautiful because it's stays true to a notion that's always been there in Lorde's creative thinking mind : Evolving. I hope Ella is proud of what she has accomplished because us, fans around the world we are. Solar Power Forever !

I’ve heard it and it’s completely different from anything she’s done before. Every song is kinda like solar power, I’d describe the full album as like acoustic experimental music. The Path is my favorite song and ‘Secrets from a Girl who’s seen it all’ is also amazing.
