Flicker
Lorde Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm a princess cut from marble, smoother than a storm
And the scars that mark my body, they're silver and gold
My blood is a flood of rubies, precious stones
It keeps my veins hot, the fires find a home in me
I move through town, I'm quiet like a fire
And my necklace is of opal, I tie it and untie it

And our people talk to me, but nothing ever hits
So people talk to me, and all the voices just burn holes
I'm going in (ooh)

This is the start of how it all ever ends
They used to shout my name, now they whisper it
I'm speeding up and this is the
Red, orange, yellow flicker beat sparking up my heart
We rip the start, the colors disappear
I never watch the stars there's so much down here
So I just try to keep up with them
Red, orange, yellow flicker beat sparking up my heart

I dream all year, but they're not the same kinds
And the shivers move down my shoulder blades in double time

And now people talk to me I'm slipping out of reach now
People talk to me, and all their faces blur
But I got my fingers laced together and I made a little prison
And I'm locking up everyone that ever laid a finger on me
I'm going in (ooh)

This is the start of how it all ever ends
They used to shout my name, now they whisper it
I'm speeding up and this is the
Red, orange, yellow flicker beat sparking up my heart
We rip the start, the colors disappear
I never watch the stars there's so much down here
So I just try to keep up with them
Red, orange, yellow flicker beat sparking up my heart

And this is the red, orange, yellow flicker beat

Sparking up my heart
And this is the red, orange, yellow flicker beat-beat-beat-beat

Overall Meaning

In these lyrics, Lorde describes herself as a princess cut from marble, suggesting strength and endurance, and her scars as silver and gold, which implies they are valuable and have made her who she is today. She then goes on to describe her blood as a flood of rubies and precious stones, signifying her passion and intensity. The fires find a home in her veins, causing her to move quietly through town, like a fire.

Despite the fact that people talk to her, nothing seems to hit or matter to her anymore. All their voices just burn holes in her, suggesting an emotional detachment from others. She enters a little prison that she creates for herself by lacing her fingers together, and she locks up everyone who has ever laid a finger on her.

The chorus of the song sees Lorde talking about the start of how it all ever ends. People used to shout her name, but now they barely whisper it. She is speeding up, and the red, orange, yellow flicker beat is sparking up her heart. She never looks at the stars as there is too much going on down here, and she just tries to keep up with this flicker beat.

Overall, the song can be interpreted in a number of ways but it mostly appears to be about finding strength even after having been scarred by life. It's a song about resilience and courage in dealing with various emotions.

@pilar.v

maybe, you would do better lol
start the games, and that the luck this always on your side.

Speaking seriously, that isn't the style of Lorde.
It is different to everything that exists today in the music.
Does not make everything what others do or what they would do.
And what would do the rest, would show images of the hunger games.
Too predictable for my.
What they wanted, Lorde dressed up as Katniss?
Can no one understand it?
And I think that they dont know to interpret the video.

@KrystalLake

TheKingsHeree Ah - but therein lies the rub! Define " bullshit ." That's really what I took issue with. What is bullshit to you is golden to others - and vice-versa. "One man's garbage..." and such.
Although I'm not a big fan,  I can see the redeeming qualities in Lorde's music.  But just as many people have a deep connection to her music, people connect to that repetitive, mindless "big booty" pop that dominates the airwaves now. (I'm taking an educated guess that was what you meant by "bullshit." Right?) It has redeeming qualities, too. Just not for you.  There's no need to insinuate that it's "fake" and diminish it's fans, like they're some sort of sub-human ignoramus who "can't comprehend MY amazing taste in music..."
Adding labels like 'real' and 'fake' outright dismiss it, and that's not really fair.
I used to be guilty of it, too. I love classic rock, and used to say that rap wasn't real music.  But it speaks to a Hell of a lot of people, because it's bigger than ever.  Even I am a fan of some rap now.
Sure, most of it is gratuitously shallow. (I don't think it ever claimed to be otherwise.) But some folks need 'Plan 9 From Outer Space' in their life more than they need 'Citizen Kane.'
[Honestly, I haven't gotten a lot of sleep. We just had a fairly big earthquake here. So I hope that makes sense.]
I'm not trying to bash you at all, King - so I hope you didn't take it like that.  Perhaps I'm trying to explain an epiphany that I had one day, when I realized that there are people in the world who don't like the Beatles or The Who. [Wha? How?!? That is good, real music! ;-) ] But I would absolutely rather hang out with someone who listens to Lorde than, say, Iggy Azalea. They seem more interesting to talk with.
But it's all opinion. None of those artists' music are any more real than the others.  Just different strokes.. Different life experiences speak to different people.
Music should make you think, feel, or both.  Some prefer feel instead think. [read between the lines on what that means.. ;-)  ]
We like what we like, because we like it! ;-) That is what makes it good.
Also, it may not be only the "bullshit" fans who hate Lorde.  It may be the aged 30+ old fogeys who don't quite relate to it, or find a youthful naiveté in her music.  I may have outed my old self here. :-) (Except I don't really hate any artist. No room or time for hate.)
Sorry for the monologue. Might be time for a nap now.  Yes.. fuzzy blankets and comfy pillows... Take care, King!
