Lorde expressed interest in performing at local venues in her early teens. She signed with Universal Music Group (UMG) in 2009 and collaborated with producer Joel Little in 2011 to start recording music. Their first effort, an EP titled The Love Club, was self-released in 2012 for free download on SoundCloud before UMG's commercial release in 2013. The EP's international chart-topping single "Royals" helped raise Lorde to prominence. Her debut studio album Pure Heroine was released that same year to critical and commercial success. The following year, Lorde curated the soundtrack for the 2014 film The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and recorded several tracks, including the single "Yellow Flicker Beat".
Lorde's second studio album Melodrama (2017) received widespread critical acclaim and debuted atop the US Billboard 200. For her third studio album, Solar Power (2021), she ventured into indie folk and psychedelic styles. The album reached number one in Australia and New Zealand and charted inside the top-10 in numerous countries, although it polarised music critics and fans alike.
Lorde's accolades include two Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards, and a Golden Globe nomination. She appeared in Time's list of the most influential teenagers in 2013 and 2014, and the 2014 edition of Forbes 30 Under 30. In addition to her solo work, she has co-written songs for other artists, including Broods and Bleachers. As of June 2017, Lorde has sold over five million albums worldwide.

Flying with nowhere to be, uh-uh
Don't know you super well
But I think that you might be the same as me
Behave abnormally
Let's let things come out of the woodwork
I'll give you my best side, tell you all my best lies, yeah
So let's let things come out of the woodwork
I'll give you my best side, tell you all my best lines
Seeing me rolling, showin' someone else love
Dancing with our shoes off
Know I think you're awesome, right?
Our rules, our dreams, we're blind
Blowing shit up with homemade d-d-d-dynamite
Our friends, our drinks, we get inspired
Blowing shit up with homemade d-d-d-dynamite
Blowing shit up with homemade d-d-d-dynamite
Might get your friend to drive, but he can hardly see, uh-uh
We'll end up painted on the road
Red and chrome
All the broken glass sparkling
I guess we're partying
So let's let things come out of the woodwork
I'll give you my best side, tell you all my best lies
Seeing me rolling, showing someone else love
Hands under your t-shirt
Know I think you're awesome, right?
Our rules, our dreams, we're blind
Blowing shit up with homemade d-d-d-dynamite
Our friends, our drinks, we get inspired
Blowing shit up with homemade d-d-d-dynamite
Blowing shit up with homemade d-d-d-dynamite
Now you know it's really gonna blow
Our rules, our dreams, we're blind
Blowing shit up with homemade d-d-d-dynamite
Our friends, our drinks, we get inspired
Blowing shit up with homemade d-d-d-dynamite
Blowing shit up with homemade d-d-d-dynamite
Blowing shit up with homemade d-d-d-dynamite
Our rules, our dreams, we're blind
Blowing shit up with homemade d-d-d-dynamite
Our friends, our drinks, we get inspired
Blowing shit up with homemade d-d-d-dynamite
The lyrics of Lorde's "Homemade Dynamite" tell the story of a wild night with a stranger, two "rebel top gun pilots" flying without a destination in mind. The singer admits to not knowing the other person well but senses they behave abnormally and might be similar to herself. Despite this, she is eager to show her best side and share her best lies with this person, letting their true selves come out of the woodwork. The chorus describes the explosive power of their bond, blowing things up with homemade dynamite as they break all the rules, follow their dreams, and get lost in the moment. They party hard and even risk their lives, driving with a friend who can hardly see and potentially painting the road red and chrome. In the end, they all know it's going to blow, but they don't care because they're alive and inspired by each other.
Overall, the song captures the excitement and danger of youthful indiscretion, the rush of adrenaline and the fear of consequences that come from breaking the rules. It's about letting go of inhibitions, embracing the unknown, and forming deep connections with strangers while reveling in the moment.
