The song was first teased on TikTok, posted on April 9, 2025. The video was the first TikTok she's ever made and posted, and it featured Lorde walking through Washington Square Park.
On April 16, the song was officially announced through her social media and her new text-message community, said to be "out soon" on Lorde's social media accounts along with a reveal of its artwork, shot by photographer Talia Chetrit. The song was eventually released on April 24, after performing it at a fan meeting in Washington Square Park, which ended up appearing in the Music Video.
Thematically, the song talks about a broken love, in which Lorde fades into the themes of giving everything to a lover, reminiscing, and more. This theme isn't new to Lorde's discography, which we’ve seen mainly on her sophomore album, Melodrama. The song was produced by Lorde herself, Jim-E Stack, and Dan Nigro.

What Was That
Lorde Lyrics
A place in the city, a chair and a bed
I cover up all the mirrors, I can't see myself yet
I wear smoke like a wedding veil
Make a meal I won't eat
Step out into the street, alone in a sea
It comes over me
Oh, I'm missing you
Yeah, I'm missing you
And all the things we used to do
MDMA in the back garden, blow our pupils up
We kissed for hours straight, well, baby, what was that?
I remember saying then, "This is the best cigarette of my life"
Well, I want you just like that
Indio haze, we're in a sandstorm, and it knocks me out
I didn't know then that you'd never be enough, oh
Since I was seventeen, I gave you everything
Now, we wake from a dream
Well, baby, what was that?
What was that?
Baby, what was that?
Do you know you're still with me, when I'm out with my friends?
I stare at the painted faces that talk current affairs
You had to know this was happening, you weren't feeling my heat
When I'm in the blue light, down at Baby's All Right
I face reality
I tried (I tried) to let (to let)
Whatever has to pass through me, pass through
But this is staying a while, I know
It might not let me go
MDMA in the back garden, blow our pupils up
We kissed for hours straight, well, baby, what was that?
I remember saying then, "This is the best cigarette of my life"Well, I want you just like that
Indio haze, we're in a sandstorm, and it knocks me out
I didn't know then, but you'd never be enough, oh
Since I was seventeen, I gave you everything
Now, we wake from a dream
Well, baby, what was that?
What was that?
'Cause I want you just like that
(When I'm in the blue light, I can make it alright)
What was that?
(When I'm in the blue light, I can make it alright)
Baby, what was that?
I cover up all the mirrors, I can't see myself yet
I wear smoke like a wedding veil
Make a meal I won't eat

@ Give your life to the Lord. Amen!
+
Trust in Jesus Christ, not antichrist.
+
I hope and pray that folks change their view and invite the Lord Jesus Christ into their life to rule and reign.
+
Satan is referred to as the prince of the power of the air for good reason, he owns the airwaves on planet earth and is the god (little g) of this world. It is my hope and prayer that you choose the God (Big G) of heaven who controls the destiny of your eternal soul.
+
(Matthew 10:28 > And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
+
(2 Corinthians 4:3-4 > [3]-But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
[4]-In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.)
(Romans 10:9-10 > [9]-That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
[10]-For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.)
(Romans 10:13 > For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.)
(Ephesians 2:8-9 > [8]-For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
[9]-Not of works, lest any man should boast.)
(Revelation 3:20 > Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and sup with him, and he with me.)
Is Jesus knocking at the door of your heart?
Is this your opportunity for eternal salvation?
If it is, I hope and pray that you open the door and invite Him, (Jesus), into your heart and life, in Jesus' name. Amen!
All praise and glory be to God. Amen!
