Writer In the Dark
Lorde Lyrics

Break the news, you're walking out
To be a good man for someone else
Sorry, I was never good like you
Stood on my chest and kept me down
Hated hearing my name on the lips of a crowd
Did my best to exist just for you

Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark
Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark
Now she's gonna play and sing and lock you in her heart
Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark

I am my mother's child, I'll love you 'til my breathing stops
I'll love you 'til you call the cops on me
But in our darkest hours, I stumbled on a secret power
I'll find a way to be without you, babe

I still feel you, now and then
Slow like pseudo-ephedrine
When you see me, will you say I've changed?
I ride the subway, read the signs
I let the seasons change my mind
I love it here since I've stopped needing you

Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark
Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark
Now she's gonna play and sing and lock you in her heart
Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark

I am my mother's child, I'll love you 'til my breathing stops
I'll love you 'til you call the cops on me
But in our darkest hours, I stumbled on a secret power
I'll find a way to be without you, babe

(I am my mother's child, I'll love you 'til my breathing stops)
(I'll love you 'til you call the cops on me)
(But in our darkest hours, I stumbled on a secret power)
(I'll find a way to be without you, babe)

Lyrics:

[Verse 1]
Break the news—you're walking out
To be a good man for someone else
Sorry I was never good like you
Stood on my chest and kept me down
Hated hearing my name on the lips of a crowd
Did my best to exist just for you

[Pre-Chorus]
Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark
Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark
Now she's gonna play and sing and lock you in her heart
Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark

[Chorus]
I am my mother's child, I'll love you 'til my breathing stops
I'll love you 'til you call the cops on me
But in our darkest hours, I stumbled on a secret power
I'll find a way to be without you, babe

[Verse 2]
I still feel you, now and then
Slow like pseudo-ephedrine
When you see me, will you say I've changed?
I ride the subway, read the signs
I let the seasons change my mind
I love it here since I’ve stopped needing you

[Pre-Chorus]
Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark
Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark
Now she's gonna play and sing and lock you in her heart
Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark

[Chorus]
I am my mother's child, I'll love you 'til my breathing stops
I'll love you 'til you call the cops on me
But in our darkest hours, I stumbled on a secret power

But in our darkest hours, I stumbled on a secret power
I'll find a way to be without you, babe

Recently, I got into grad school. I'm succeeding in life. I'm following my dreams. And the whole time, I feel like it's not real. It feels like I don't deserve it. My life, the life I'm leaving behind, everything I loved, I'm leaving it, to be what I've always imagine myself being.

I am my mother's child. I've always had the power to be someone, to go somewhere. I'm going somewhere. And I DO deserve it. And now I need to say goodbye to what I know. My future is ahead of me, it's time to step into it.

Whether it's becoming a superstar, finding your dream job, moving forward in your education, winning any sort of award, achieving in any sort of way, etc, it's difficult to say goodbye. That's why it sounds like she's crying in the chorus: she's not saying goodbye to him, she's saying it to EVERYTHING.

For me, it's about how to move on when you're going places, but you don't know how to say goodbye. This is the most relatable Lorde song for me.

She actually sounds like she's kinda crying in the chorus and that somehow made it even more beautiful and somehow dark.

Honestly id say lets not stray away from the original genuine comment.. Fuck this Andrew guy... She does really sound like she crying, out of all her songs no lie... And if u can push thru that and not want to do a retake or anything and leave it as is.. That's a beautiful artist and true @ heart for u.. Dont let stupid comments distract for the real reason we're all here and fans of @lorde. If she really cried she opened up so much vulnerability to trust with her fans.. And that's something to be cherished.

Drew Aw

it's like when she says "i love you till my breathing stops" she sounds like she's crying so the song's really profound
