Writer in the Dark
Lorde Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
To be a good man for someone else
Sorry, I was never good like you
Stood on my chest and kept me down
Hated hearing my name on the lips of a crowd
Did my best to exist just for you
Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark
Now she's gonna play and sing and lock you in her heart
Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark
I am my mother's child, I'll love you 'til my breathing stops
I'll love you 'til you call the cops on me
But in our darkest hours, I stumbled on a secret power
I'll find a way to be without you, babe
I still feel you, now and then
Slow like pseudo-ephedrine
When you see me, will you say I've changed?
I ride the subway, read the signs
I let the seasons change my mind
I love it here since I've stopped needing you
Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark
Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark
Now she's gonna play and sing and lock you in her heart
Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark
I am my mother's child, I'll love you 'til my breathing stops
I'll love you 'til you call the cops on me
But in our darkest hours, I stumbled on a secret power
I'll find a way to be without you, babe
(I am my mother's child, I'll love you 'til my breathing stops)
(I'll love you 'til you call the cops on me)
(But in our darkest hours, I stumbled on a secret power)
(I'll find a way to be without you, babe)
In Lorde's "Writer in the Dark," the singer mourns the end of a relationship that has left her with a sense of betrayal and hurt. She begins the song by pointing out that her partner has made the decision to walk away from her, leaving her to deal with the aftermath of their departure. She notes that her partner is leaving her because he wants to be a "good man" for someone else. The singer acknowledges that she was not as good as her partner to begin with and that he used his power over her to keep her down. She notes that hearing her name on the lips of a crowd made her feel small and insignificant, and she tried her best to exist only for her partner.
The chorus of the song is directed at the singer's partner, and she suggests that he will come to regret leaving her. She notes that he should have taken into account that he was kissing a writer in the dark, and that she would use her pain and heartbreak to create beautiful music that will "lock you in her heart" forever. In the second verse, the singer describes her loyalty to her partner, adapting a step from her mother. The singer dreads the prospect of losing the love of her life so much that she even admits to loving him until the point the cops would be called onto her. However, she comes to a realization that her love for him also imbued her with a sense of power, a "secret power" that she will use to move on without him.

@dreamgirl-kf1yw
She actually sounds like she's kinda crying in the chorus and that somehow made it even more beautiful and somehow dark.

She gets robbed of a Grammy EVERY DAMN YEAR
@serenitynow8602
I love her music, but shes only released two albums so she was only eligible for a Grammy the year those albums came out, so she was only robbed two years.
@apparition555
2002 Honda Accord she won for PH, but she was undoubtedly snubbed for Melodrama. Kasey Musgraves is barely a mainstream artist. I mean, her album was okay, but I don’t understand how it won over Melodrama. Honestly, fuck the Grammys at this point
@migueldiaz4033
@@apparition555 Bruno Mars won over Melodrama, not Kacey Musgraves
