Royals
Lorde feat. Rick Ross Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've never seen a diamond in the flesh
I cut my teeth on wedding rings in the movies
And I'm not proud of my address
In a torn up town, no postcode envy

But every song's like
Gold teeth, Grey Goose, trippin' in the bathroom
Bloodstains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room
We don't care
We're driving Cadillacs in our dreams
But everybody's like
Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece
Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash
We don't care
We aren't caught up in your love affair

And we'll never be royals (royals)
It don't run in our blood
That kind of luxe just ain't for us
We crave a different kind of buzz
Let me be your ruler (ruler)
You can call me queen bee
And baby, I'll rule (I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule)
Let me live that fantasy

My friends and I, we've cracked the code
We count our dollars on the train to the party
And everyone who knows us knows
That we're fine with this, we didn't come from money

But every song's like
Gold teeth, Grey Goose, trippin' in the bathroom
Bloodstains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room
We don't care
We're driving Cadillacs in our dreams
But everybody's like
Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece
Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash
We don't care
We aren't caught up in your love affair

And we'll never be royals (royals)
It don't run in our blood
That kind of luxe just ain't for us
We crave a different kind of buzz
Let me be your ruler (ruler)
You can call me queen bee
And baby, I'll rule (I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule)
Let me live that fantasy

Oh
Oh (oh, oh)
We're bigger than we ever dreamed
And I'm in love with being queen
Oh
Oh (oh, oh)
Life is great without a care
We aren't caught up in your love affair

And we'll never be royals (royals)
It don't run in our blood
That kind of luxe just ain't for us
We crave a different kind of buzz
Let me be your ruler (ruler)
You can call me queen bee

And baby, I'll rule (I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule)
Let me live that fantasy

Overall Meaning

The song Royals by Lorde ft. Rick Ross is a satirical take on the excessive luxurious lifestyle portrayed by many pop culture icons. The opening lyrics immediately set the tone for the rest of the song, with Lorde singing that she has never seen a diamond in the flesh and that her only exposure to expensive jewelry is through movies. She then goes on to detail the contrast of her humble beginnings living in a run-down town with no fancy postcode envy, to the excessive materialism shown in many popular songs.

Lorde sings about the juxtaposition of the typical pop culture icons' lifestyle, and the lifestyle that she and her friends enjoy. She mentions that they enjoy counting their dollars on the train to the party, and that they are entirely content with their lives, even though they didn't grow up with money. The chorus repeats the declaration that they will never be interested in the kind of luxurious lifestyle that many others desire. She instead craves a different kind of buzz and asks her listeners to let her be their ruler.

The song's lyrics, while seemingly simple, convey a message that many can relate to. Lorde is essentially saying that being rich or famous is not everything and that there is a simpler way of life that can be just as satisfying. The song's message resonated with many listeners and helped catapult Lorde to stardom in 2013.
