Lords Prayer
Lords of the Underground Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Our father
Which art in heaven
Hallowed be thy name
Thy kingdom come

Thy will be done on earth
As it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses

As we forgive those who trespass against us
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil
For thine is the kingdom

And the power
And the glory, forever, amen

Overall Meaning

The above lyrics are actually the beginning of the Lord's Prayer, a Christian prayer that was taught by Jesus Christ to his disciples. The prayer starts with an acknowledgement of God as our father and being worthy to be venerated. Then, the prayer moves on to a surrender to God's will on earth, in the same way, it is done in heaven. The prayer also asks for forgiveness and for protection against temptation and evil. The prayer ends with an acknowledgement of God's omnipotence, power and glory.

The Lords of the Underground's song 'What's Going On' uses the Lord's Prayer as an introduction to a song that questions the state of the world and the suffering that humans go through. The prayer serves both as an introduction and as a commentary on how despite the prayers and belief, the world has not yet managed to find common ground and live in peace.
