Snow
Loreena McKennitt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

White are the far-off plains,
And white the fading forests grow;
The wind dies out along the height
And denser still the snow,
A gathering weight on roof and tree
Falls down scarce audibly.

The meadows and far-sheeted streams
Lie still without a sound;
Like some soft minister of dreams
The snowfall hoods me around;
In wood and water, earth and air,
A silence is everywhere.

Save when at lonely spells
Some farmer's sleigh is urged on,
With rustling runner and sharp bells,
Swings by me and is gone;
Or from the empty waste I hear
A sound remote and clear;

The barking of a dog,
To cattle, is sharply pealed,
Borne, echoing from some wayside stall
Or barnyard far afield;
Then all is silent and the snow
Falls settling soft and slow

The evening deepens and the grey
Folds closer Earth to sky
The world seems shrouded, so far away.
Its noises sleep, and I
As secret as yon buried stream
Plod dumbly on and dream.

And dream
And dream

I dream
And I dream…

Overall Meaning

In this piece, Loreena McKennitt creates an ethereal atmosphere that is serene and calming through a vivid description of a snowfall. The opening lines depict vast plains and forests covered in white snow. The weather is so still that the wind comes to a halt, and the only sound is that of the snow falling down on rooftops and trees, creating a blanket of stillness everywhere.

Furthermore, she describes the stillness and quietness of the surrounding landscape with a poignant depth, emphasising that the snowfall has created a still space where everything seems to have stopped for an extended length of time. The third verse describes a lull that is sometimes interrupted by a passing sleigh, the distant barking of a dog, and the sound of the soft rustling of animals in the barnyard. As the evening deepens, the world seems shrouded in darkness, and its noises sleep, and she is left alone to roam about in the snow.

In summary, Loreena McKennitt's song "Snow" tells the story of the calm and quietness brought about by a snowfall that seems to stop time and gives a feeling of peaceful stillness.

I heard this just before Christmastime in December 2009 on a plane from Chicago to NYC through my headset with my love sitting beside me, gazing out the window at night at the towns twinkling below...it was not quite this produced and a much more skeletal version...the beauty of the hauntingly beautiful voice of Loreena McKennitt, the lyrics and probably the final words, I DREAM...that REALLY took me in ( I have a Pisces moon!) and made me a Loreena McKennitt fan. It still is such a prescient, visual, sensual and audio memory for me...may it remain so, year after year! In gratitude for this beauty! XOXOX

This is one of her songs that always brings tears to my eyes. It is so beautiful and well performed. I have virtually everything she has ever done and I like every piece she has ever performed and recorded. To me she is a once-in-a-lifetime composer, writer, performer.
