Everything It Takes
Loretta Lynn Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I love you more than she ever will
But the only way she can get a man is steal
I don't know if I should tell you this or not
She's got everything it takes to take everything you've got

And when she takes you she's taken everything that I've got, too
She's had a million old flames so to her you're nothing new
She's cold as ice but you still think she's hot
She's got everything it takes to take everything you've got

She turned you on and then you turned on me
I'm more of a woman than she'll ever be
To me, she ain't nothing but to her, that's a lot
She's got everything it takes to take everything you've got

And when she takes you she's taking everything that I've got too
She's had a million old flames so to her you're nothing new
She's cold as ice but you still think she's hot

She's got everything it takes to take everything you've got
She's got everything it takes to take everything you've got

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Loretta Lynn and Elvis Costello's collaboration, "Everything it Takes," paint a picture of a woman who is jealous and angry about another woman trying to steal her man. The singer starts by admitting that she loves her man more than the other woman ever could, but that the other woman has a way of stealing men. The singer is unsure if she should even tell her man about the other woman's intentions, but ultimately warns that this woman has everything it takes to take everything he's got.

Throughout the rest of the song, the singer continues to warn the man about the other woman's tactics, stating that she's had many old flames before him and is cold-hearted despite appearing attractive. The singer asserts that she is a better woman for him than the other woman could ever be, but realizes that to him, the other woman appears to be a lot. The song concludes with a repetition of the warning that this other woman has everything it takes to take everything the man's got.

Overall, "Everything it Takes" is a cautionary tale about jealousy and possessiveness in romantic relationships. The underlying message seems to be that while it's natural to feel jealous and protective over a partner, it's important not to let that jealousy consume you or drive a wedge between you and your loved one.

I don't know if Ms. Lynn can read this but I hope she can. I'm from Turkey and I'm a country listener for 2 years. When I was in first class at high school I started playing guitar and that's how I met country. First songs I played with my guitar were Loretta Lynn songs. She, her songs, her story mean so so so much to me. She's one of the cutest, lovliest, prettiest and wisest people I know. I try to teach people what country really is and it's not something to make fun of. I love you Ms. Lynn, so much!! All my best wishes are with you. I can't wait to hold your new album in my hands. 💞💞💞👑👑👑

Loretta Lyn may be in her later years of life but man can she sing up a huge storm with this awesome voice of her's that way out shines singers half her age and younger.....
Lady has the greatest female voice ever in my opinion... Great to see Loretta doing it her own way and this is a very long awaited album, only wish my Mom were here to see it.
