And outside icicles hanging from the eaves
And the snowlakes are flyin' just as far as I can see
But it won't seem like Christmas to me
No it won't seem like Christmas you'll be there and I'll be here
So I'll decorate a heartache with my tears
So have a merry merry Christmas wherever you may be
No it won't seem like Christmas what Christmas without you
I'll be lonely but my darling I'll be true
So have a merry merry Christmas wherever you may be
Oh but it won't seem like Christmas to me
No it won't seem like Christmas to me
The lyrics of Loretta Lynn's song 'It Won't Seem Like Christmas' speak of the feelings of loneliness and heartbreak that come with the holiday season when someone you love is not with you to share it. The singer observes the festive activity around her like decorating Christmas trees, icicles hanging from the eaves, and snowflakes flying, but cannot get into the holiday spirit because her loved one is not there to share it with. The chorus emphasizes the sentiment, with the singer lamenting that Christmas won't truly feel like Christmas without her love.
The second verse of the song goes deeper into the feelings of the singer, who acknowledges the reality of the distance between her and her loved one. She resigns herself to decorate her heartache with tears in the absence of the one she loves. However, she still holds a candle of hope, wishing her love a merry Christmas no matter where they are, but acknowledging that it won't feel like Christmas to her. In a nutshell, the song captures the sadness and emptiness that can come with the holidays when someone important is not there to share it with.
