Where No One Stands Alone

In the darkness as black as the sea
And my heart was afraid
And I cried, "Oh Lord, don't hide your face from me"
Hold my hand all the way every hour of the day
From here to the great unknown
Take my hand let me stand where no one stands alone
With great riches to call my own
But I don't know a thing in this whole wide world
That's worse than being alone
Hold my hand all the way every hour of the day
From here to the great unknown
Take my hand let me stand where no one stands alone
In Loretta Lynn's song 'Where No One Stands Alone', the lyrics describe a person who feels lost and alone, searching for guidance and assurance that they are not alone. The imagery of the darkness, symbolizing the person's fear and uncertainty, is juxtaposed with the hope that the person finds in their faith in God. The plea to hold their hand and guide them every hour and every day towards the "great unknown" suggests a willingness to trust and rely on a higher power to guide them through life's challenges.
The second verse of the song speaks to the futility of material possessions and the emptiness that can come from being surrounded by wealth and extravagance. Despite any material comforts, the person recognizes that they are still vulnerable to feeling alone and lost. The repetition of the chorus throughout the song reinforces the idea of the power of companionship, both human and divine, in helping one feel connected and supported.
