I pray one more is not too much to ask
I've tried to fight this battle by myself
But its a war that I can't win without your help
So tonight I'm as low
As any man can go
I'm down and I can't fall much farther
Now on my knees and I'm begging to you father
Would you help me turn the wine back into water
So many times I've hurt the ones I love
I've pushed them to the edge of giving up
They've stood by me but how much can they stand
Oh if I don't put this bottle in your hand
So tonight I'm as low
As anyone can go
I'm down and I can't seem to fall much farther
And once upon a time you turned the water into wine
Now on my knees I'm turning to you father
Would you help me turn the wine back into water
I shook my fists at heaven
For all the hurt that I've been through
Now I'm begging for forgiveness
And a miracle from you
So tonight I'm as low
As any man can go
I'm down and I can't seem to fall much farther
Oh once upon a time you turned the water into wine
Now on my knees I'm turning to ya father
Would you help me turn the wine back into water
Would you help me turn this wine back into water
The lyrics of Loretta Lynn's song "Wine Into Water" are a heartfelt plea to God for help and forgiveness for battling addiction to alcohol. The singer confesses to have hurt the ones he loves and pushed them to the edge of giving up, but now realizes that he can’t win the war without God's help. He asks God to turn the "wine back into water", to help him undo the damage he has done and to sober him up. The lyrics are very powerful and relatable to anyone who has struggled with addiction or known someone who has.
The biblical reference to turning water into wine is also significant here, as it illustrates the profound transformation that is necessary in the singer's life. He is asking for the same kind of miracle in his own life, for a transformation that only God can bring about. The symbol of water as opposed to wine underlines the theme of cleansing and purification, which is a crucial part of recovery from addiction.
