You're The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly
Loretta Lynn Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, you're the reason I'm ridin' around on recapped tyres
An' you're the reason I'm hangin' our clothes outside on wires

An' you're the reason our kids are ugly, little darlin'
Ah, but looks ain't everything
And money ain't everything
But, I love you just the same
Well, you're the reason I changed to beer from soda pop
An' you're the reason I never get to go to the beauty shop

You're the reason our kids are ugly, little darlin'
Oh, but looks ain't everything
And money ain't everything
But, I love you just the same

I guess that we won't ever have
Everything we need
'Cause when we get ahead
It's got another mouth to feed

An' that's the reason that my good looks and my figure's gone
An' that's the reason that I ain't got no hair to comb

An' you're the reason our kids are ugly, little darlin'
Ah but looks ain't everything
And money ain't everything
But, I love you just the same

Conway, why in the devil don't you go and shave
An' put on a clean pair of pants?
But Loretta, look at yourself
I wish you'd take them curlers out of your hair an'
An' go put on a little makeup an'

An' get out of that housecoat before supper

Ha, well, let me tell you somethin', Conway
Considerin' everything that I went through today
I look like a movie star
Uh, yeah, Ruth Cassidy
Thank you

Besides that
All of our kids took after your part of the family, anyway
Oh they did, huh? What about the one's that's bald?
Well, I guess you might say they took after me

Overall Meaning

The song "You're The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly" by Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty is a humorous take on the ups and downs of a long-term relationship. The song's opening line sets the tone for the rest of the lyrics, as Twitty sings about being forced to drive on recapped tires due to financial constraints caused by his partner. He then goes on to list the numerous ways in which Lynn has impacted his life, from his drinking habits to his appearance. However, the chorus of the song suggests that despite these setbacks, their love for each other remains strong and unaffected.

The song can be interpreted as a satirical commentary on the ways in which many couples struggle with the little annoyances and inconveniences that come with sharing a life together. While Lynn and Twitty's quibbling may seem petty, it speaks to a universal truth about the compromises that are necessary to maintain a healthy and satisfying long-term relationship. The repetition of the phrase "looks ain't everything / And money ain't everything / But, I love you just the same" reinforces this message, suggesting that true love is not dependent on superficial qualities.

Overall, the song is a lighthearted but poignant reminder that relationships are about more than just appearances and financial stability; they are about the connections between people that endure through thick and thin.

I met her back in 1982, right after Coal Miner's daughter came out. I was 18 and working at The Valley Forge Music Fair Concession stand. One of the percs was tickets to a show on your day off. The night before as she waited in the lobby, I told her I'd be seeing the show the next day and asked if I could get an autograph. She said "Sure, stop by my bus before the show"

The next day, I show up with a tour book, figuring someone would take in to her. Instead she came out and asked me if I wanted to come in for a Coke. She chatted with me for twenty minutes. Then went out and gave one heck of a show. Even said hi to me from the stage before doing Coal Miner's Daughter. One of the nicest people I ever met. RIP Ms. Lynn
