The band, which collaborated with some music stars such as Debbie Harry, Mick Jones, Celia Cruz, Rubén Blades and Fishbone, received the MTV Latino Video Music Award in 1994 for the single "Matador", in what probably was the peak of popularity of the band. On September 29 of that year they produced an MTV Unplugged concert. The Cadillacs also won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album, and were nominated in the 2000 Latin Grammy Awards for Best Band and Best Music Video ("La Vida"), which received the now-defunct International Viewer's Choice Award (Southern Region) at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards.

Y sabe bien lo que le va a pasar
Entonces saca su revolver
Y va a disparar
La policía lo rodea sin tregua
Lo buscan por ajuste de cuentas
Y es el sargento que sin vacilar
Abre fuego y le da
El león Santillán pronuncio palabras
Ante los oficiales
Que desconcertados miraban
Y les dijo
Queridos enemigos de siempre
Hoy dejo este mundo de dolor
Nunca se olviden
Que el llanto de la gente
Va hacia el mar
Van al mar van al mar
Llanto y dolor
Sufrimiento de un pueblo
Se ahogan y se hunde en el mar
Van al mar, van al mar
Llanto y dolor
Sufrimiento de un pueblo
Se ahogan y se hunde en el mar
Lo dijo el león (Manuel Santillán)
Los oficiales que vieron
Morir a Santillán
Abandonaron la institución
Nunca más se supo de ellos
Del caso no se hablo más
Sin embargo
Por el viejo San Telmo
En un sucio bodegón
Dicen que un borracho
Murmuró llorando las palabras
Que eran del león
Van al mar, van al mar
Llanto y dolor
Sufrimiento de un pueblo
Se ahogan y se hunde en el mar
Van al mar, van al mar
Llanto y dolor
Sufrimiento de un pueblo
Se ahogan y se hunde en el mar
Lo dijo el león
Van al mar, van al mar
Llanto y dolor
Sufrimiento de un pueblo
Se ahogan en el mar
Van al mar, van al mar
Llanto y dolor
Sufrimiento de un pueblo
Se ahogan y se hunde en el mar
Van al mar, van al mar
Llanto dolor
Sufrimiento de un pueblo
Se ahogan en el mar
Van al mar, van al mar
The song "Manuel Santillán El León" by Los Fabulosos Cadillacs tells the story of a man named Manuel Santillán, known as "El León", who is hiding in an alley with a gun, aware that he will soon be caught by the police. As they surround him, he fires his weapon, but is ultimately shot and killed by a sergeant. Before he dies, he addresses the officers and says, "Dear eternal enemies, today I leave this world of pain. Never forget that the tears of the people go towards the sea." The song then transitions into a chorus that repeats the phrase "Van al mar" ("They go to the sea"), which emphasizes the idea that the suffering of the people inevitably leads to the deep, vast, and seemingly endless depths of the ocean.
The meaning behind the lyrics is multi-layered and complex. On one level, it can be interpreted as a metaphor for the cycle of oppression, violence, and despair that plagues societies at large. The "eternal enemies" mentioned in the song may represent entrenched power structures or individuals who benefit from the suffering of others. Manuel Santillán can be seen as a symbol for those who are caught in this cycle and who ultimately have no escape from it, no matter how they struggle. The tears of the people that flow towards the sea may represent a sort of collective grief and anguish that is difficult to contain or remedy.
On another level, the song can be understood as a commentary on specific events that took place in Argentina during the late 20th century, including the Dirty War and its aftermath. Los Fabulosos Cadillacs were known for their politically-charged music and activism, and they often addressed the social and economic injustices that were prevalent in their country at the time.
Overall, "Manuel Santillán El León" is a poignant and powerful song that resonates with audiences around the world. It speaks to universal themes of suffering, injustice, and the struggle for liberation, while also highlighting the specific historical context in which it was written.

@guillermobarrera5761
