The band, which collaborated with some music stars such as Debbie Harry, Mick Jones, Celia Cruz, Rubén Blades and Fishbone, received the MTV Latino Video Music Award in 1994 for the single "Matador", in what probably was the peak of popularity of the band. On September 29 of that year they produced an MTV Unplugged concert. The Cadillacs also won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album, and were nominated in the 2000 Latin Grammy Awards for Best Band and Best Music Video ("La Vida"), which received the now-defunct International Viewer's Choice Award (Southern Region) at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards.
Paquito
Los Fabulosos Cadillacs Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
En un modesto hogar
Hay almas que están llorando
Porque paquito el menor
Contrajo aquel terrible mal
¿Jesús, como salir de esta?
¿De maricas y adictos?
Grita su padre
Y se pregunta en que pudieron fallar
Esa noche nadie habló en la cena
Paco está de malas que condena
Porque unos están tan bien
Y otros están tan mal
Pobre paquito
No me vuelvas a dejar
Que Dios bendiga al pobre
Y al que se enferma
Es tiempo de perder
Que la derrota no te duela
The lyrics of Los Fabulosos Cadillacs's song Paquito tell the tragic story of a young boy named Paquito who has contracted a terrible illness. The opening lines describe his family, who are crying in their modest home not far from Buenos Aires because of the illness plaguing Paquito, the youngest member of the family. The chorus seems to be directed at those who would judge Paquito or his family, calling upon them to recognize that Paquito's sickness is not his fault but rather something that has been unfairly thrust upon him. The song suggests that the reaction of Paquito's father to his illness is one of anger and confusion, questioning how this could happen to his son and wondering if there was anything he could have done to prevent it.
As the song goes on, it portrays Paquito as a victim not only of his illness but also of the social prejudices surrounding it. His father seems to be in denial about the seriousness of the situation, suggesting that diseases like this are only for "maricas y adictos" (a derogatory term for gay men and drug addicts). Even at the dinner table, nobody speaks about Paquito's illness. Meanwhile, Paquito suffers in silence, gritting his teeth during the day and crying alone in his room at night. The song seems to be calling attention to the way that society often condemns those who are sick, rather than showing compassion and understanding.
Overall, Paquito is a powerful and emotional song that speaks to the pain and suffering that people can experience when they are struck by illness. The lyrics are both poignant and thought-provoking, challenging listeners to examine their own attitudes toward those who are sick and asking them to embrace a more compassionate and accepting mindset.
