El grupo fue formado en 1937, por Carlos Morgan, los hermanos Pedro y Ernesto Amenábar y Mario Besoaín, cuatro amigos universitarios. A lo largo de su historia ha contado con un total de 18 integrantes, la mayoría profesionales en otras áreas. También la integraron Alfredo Sauvalle (hermano de Sergio), en 1974, y Héctor Inostroza, en 1995.
El grupo ha realizado giras por América, Asia, Europa y Oceanía, y ha recibido reconocimientos de la Organización de Estados Americanos y la Unesco. En febrero de 2007 el grupo celebró su "Gala 70º Aniversario" en el Teatro Municipal de Viña del Mar.
En la actualidad, la agrupación realiza algunas presentaciones en Chile, principalmente en eventos y conciertos en pequeños lugares.
