The Parra brothers (Gabriel, drums Claudio, piano, and Eduardo, electric piano) met Mario Mutis (bass) and Eduardo "Gato" Alquinta (guitars and lead vocals) in their childhood and started to play music for fun. They became prominent in Viña del Mar, playing at many gigs with a bossa-nova/bolero style. The former name of the band was High & Bass. However, most of their fans believed they were called "Jaibas" (crabs). After a while they decide to correct their name and definitely change it to Los Jaivas.
After a first phase characterized by a of more tropical sound they began to blend styles, experimenting with hippie sound, progressive rock and avant-garde jazz. Their most recognized feature it's their blending of styles with the traditional sounds -and instruments- of the region.

His daughter Juanita tooked his place at the drums. In January of 2003, "Gato" (the cat) Alquinta died in Coquimbo (Chile) of a heart attack. His death was a national mourning and more than 400.000 people attendend his funeral. The band continued playing with Gato's children: Ankatu (guitar), Eloy (saxophone)and Aurora (vocals).
A few months after Gato's death, Aurora left the band to continue her career as an actress. Her position was taken by Carlos Cabezas.
A year after Gato's death his son Eloy died too at the age of 33 after from a heart attack. His position was taken in the group by Francisco Bosco.
The band, after 43 years of activity, has gained a cult status and still perform live, regardless the tragic events ocurred in the past years.

The lyrics to Los Jaivas’s song Amor Americano are rich in metaphor and imagery, capturing the beauty and mystery of the Andean mountain region. The song describes a journey with a lover through the mountain landscape, exploring secret stones and the rushing waters of the Urubamba river. The image of the pollen flying into the yellow cup of the river evokes a sense of natural harmony and interconnectivity. The enredadera vine is described as flying through the emptiness, while the stones and garlands hold onto the silence of the surrounding mountains.
Throughout the song, the themes of love and unity are woven together with the natural imagery. The sonorous sounds of the Andean mountains are described as a language that is barely audible to the human ear, a whisper from the spirit of the earth. The song also speaks of time and the importance of letting it unfold naturally, with its own rhythms and patterns, like the rushing waters and broken springs. The final lines suggest that the “dead kingdom”, long forgotten, is still alive in the solitude of the mountain peaks, indicating that there is always hope for rebirth and regeneration in even the darkest of places.
Overall, the message of Amor Americano is one of interconnectedness and reverence for the natural world. The song urges listeners to embrace the beauty and complexity of the natural world, to listen for its hidden languages, and to recognize the power of love to unite all things.

Love, love, do not touch the border, nor worship the submerged head, let time fulfill its statue in its hall of broken springs, and among the fast water and the walls, collect the air of the gorge, the parallel sheets of wind, the blind channel of the mountain ranges, the rough greeting of the dew, and go up, flower by flower, through the thicket, stepping on the fallen serpent.
Come to my own being, my dawn, even to the crowned solitudes, the dead kingdom still lives.
