Come On
Los Lobos Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, come on let's go, let's go, let's go little darlin'
Tell me that you'll never leave me
Come on, come on, let's go again and again and again and again

Well, now swing me, swing me, swing me all the way darling
Come on, let's go little darling
Let's go, let's go again once more
Well, I love you so yeah
And I'll never let you go
Come on baby soon
Oh pretty baby, I love you so

Well, let's go, let's go, let's go little sweetheart
And then we can always be together
Come on, come on let's go again

Let's go
I love you so yeah
And I'll never let you go
Come on baby soon
Oh pretty baby, I, I love you so
Well, let's go, let's go, let's go little darling
Tell me that you'll never leave me
Come on, come on, let's go again and again and again and again

Come on, let's go and do it again, again and again and again

Again, again and again and again
Come on, let's go and do it again

Overall Meaning

to town

Los Lobos’s song “When The Circus Comes” is a poignant reflection on the lingering emotions and memories of a past relationship. The lyrics explore what could have been and what is left behind, as the singer muses about the opportunities that could have been taken but were not. The opening lines hint at this overall sentiment, with the singer lamenting the missed chances of a failed relationship: “Could have had a chance to get out of this wreck/The time that you came and the day that you left/Could have had a chance.”

The chorus builds on this theme, as the singer imagines what he will do when faced with the inevitable return of the circus: “But when the lights are turning 'round/And wheels are rolling on the ground/That day I'll burn this whole place down/When the circus comes to town.” The circus is a metaphor for the cyclical nature of life, and the way that things that have left us have a tendency to return - whether we are ready for them or not.

The bridge of the song then describes how the singer and the lost love carved their names in a tree, yet her name was scratched out. While the earlier verse showed the singer feeling melancholy about missed opportunities, this section of the song shows him feeling hurt by the actions of his ex-partner. The repeated phrase “Doesn’t mean that much” is poignant in its repetition; while on one hand, the singer seems to be trying to convince himself that the actions don’t matter, the repetition also suggests a deep emotional wellspring of pain that the singer may be trying to escape.

This song makes me feel young again. Back when I didn’t have a care in the world, Obama was still in office, COVID didn’t exist, back when I could watch Nickelodeon all day. I can just see my 7-8 year old self, sitting on top of my parent’s bed on our GameCube, playing the Cars video game for hours and listening to this the entire time I was exploring Radiator Springs. It was a time I once knew and would give anything to relive. You could play me the guitar solo and it would immediately bring nostalgic tears to my eyes and bring me back to this simpler time. I just wish I could relive those days again.
