1. Los Miserables is a well-known Chilean punk rock band formed in the early 1990s shortly after the demise of the military regime of Augusto Pinochet. The band is known for its songs charged with strong left-wing political ideas and anti-establishment commentary. The band has clearly presented itself as actvist in its work with major participation in political events, international charity concerts, human rights events, and volunteer work in impoverished Chilean communities. The band has modeled itself in some ways after the famed Chilean band Los Prisioneros, who left a void after their initial break-up in 1990. Their albums can be found in Chile, Latin America, and the United States.
This band achieved major success in Chile in the mid 1990s, and is well known in Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico. They have recorded 8 albums, including three live albums, and received gold records in Chile. The band has also contributed songs to major Chilean movie soundtracks - including the main song for the Chilean film El Leyton, a film by famed director Gonzalo Justiniano, of the films B-Happy (2003), Amnesia (1994), and Caluga o Menta (1990). They have also performed in tribute albums to Victor Jara, Violeta Parra, and Los Prisioneros.

(PISAGUA!!)
Por las calles de nuestra ciudad
(PISAGUA!!)
Nadie supo su destino
Estaba desaparecido
Su familia y su hijo
Desde el cuarte general
(PISAGUA!!)
Una orden se escucho dar
(PISAGUA!!)
Debe ser fusilado
Y su cuerpo enterrado
Los soldados se quedaron
Con su sangre en las manos
18 años después
(PISAGUA!!)
De angustia y de dolor
(PISAGUA!!)
Encontraron su cuerpo
Mutilado y deshecho
Su familia y su hijo
Piden juicio y castigo
EN EL INFIERNO ESTÁ EL GENERAL!!*
(PISAGUA!!)
Y ya cago con su libertad
(PISAGUA!!)
Tiene el peso en su consciencia
De quitar vidas ajenas
Por su orden apresados
Y por la espalda asesinado.
*encarcelado está el general
The lyrics to Los Miserables' song Pisagua describe the disappearance and murder of a man by the military during the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile. The song begins with a description of the man's disappearance, and the pain that his family felt when they never saw him again. The following verses describe the orders given by the military to have him executed and buried, and the guilt that the soldiers felt for carrying out the orders. It then moves forward 18 years to the discovery of the victim's body, and his family's call for justice and punishment. The chorus repeats the name of the town, Pisagua, as if to never let the memory of this atrocity fade away.
The song is a powerful critique of the human rights abuses committed during the Chilean dictatorship. By describing the pain and suffering of an individual and their family, it underscores the larger societal impact of authoritarian rule. The use of repetition, enumeration, and strong images such as "con su sangre en las manos" (with blood on their hands) and "mutilado y deshecho" (mutilated and destroyed) highlights the brutality and horror of state violence.
