José Pérez León
Los Tigres Del Norte Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
jamas volvera.
The song "Jose Perez Leon" by Los Tigres Del Norte tells the story of a young man from Nuevo Leon, Mexico named Jose Perez Leon. At 19 years old, he leaves his wife and embarks on a journey to the United States, lured by the promise of a job picking cotton. His cousin, who had previously migrated to the U.S. and found work, sends a telegram urging him to come. Jose meets with a smuggler or "pollero" named Willy, who promises to help him cross the border. On a Friday morning, Jose and 30 other undocumented immigrants are packed into a freight train car and smuggled across the border. The train ride lasts almost 7 hours, during which oxygen becomes scarce and many of the immigrants suffocate to death, including Jose.
The song highlights the dangerous and often deadly journey that undocumented immigrants must undertake in order to find work and a better life in the United States. It also shines a light on the exploitation of immigrants by smugglers who are willing to profit from their desperation, with no regard for their safety or well-being. The lyrics also touch on the devastating impact that these journeys have on the families left behind, as Jose's wife is left to raise their child alone.
