In 1982, three guys from Concepción, Álvaro Henríquez, Roberto Titae Lindl, and Pancho Molina started a band called Los Dick Stones, whose set list was based on songs by Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, and Gene Vincent. They quickly became very popular in universities, bars, and peñas around the southern city of Concepción. Given their ambition to achieve success in the Chilean mainstream, they decided to move to the capital city of Santiago and changed their name to Los Tres. In 1988 Ángel Parra joined the band and even though Los Tres is Spanish for "the three", they decided to keep the name.
During years when culture and art began to rise again -after the cultural and night life had been reduced for almost 20 years due to the military regime that had ruled Chile since 1973-, the times were right for their music to develop and their popularity to grow. They recorded 9 albums during their first stage together, from 1982 until 2000.
In 2000 the band went into an indefinite break and its members continued their musical careers in personal projects.
On 2006 Los Tres, with the exception of Pancho Molina, announced their reunion including a show in May, the festival Vive Latino in Mexico City, and a show in Santiago de Chile. The first single Camino was already released. Their tenth album (Hágalo usted mismo) was a result of this reunion. The band is still together.

Los Tres Lyrics

Pensar sin hablar
Servicio militar
Muerte cerebral
Cerrar sin abrir
Primaveras mil
Una sorda feliz
Se jactó de nuestro fin
Tirar sin lanzar
No, no llega el dolor
Y si es lo peor
Muerto vivo mejor
Triángulo de amor
Bermuda del dolor
Disparo al corazón
Burbuja de terror
Caída sin saltar
Estruendo sin igual
Palabras al pasar
No hay forma de frenar
Sexo sin mirar
Mi almohada puede más
Que todo tu amor
Que vive en mi bolsón
La saliva va
La saliva viene atrás
Corte cerebral
El principio es al final
Consomé de callampas
Dulce miel de arañas
Consomé de callampas
Dulce miel
No endulza sin picar
La espada y la pared
Me atraviesan y no al revés
The lyrics of Los Tres's song La Espada y la Pared present a series of seemingly unrelated phrases, creating a fragmented yet evocative narrative of personal struggles and societal issues. The repetition of contradictory actions such as "Hablar sin pensar, pensar sin hablar" suggests the confusion and ambivalence of the singer. There is a sense of disillusionment with traditional institutions, as seen in the lines "Servicio militar, Muerte cerebral", which juxtaposes the oppressive nature of military service with the potential for mental stagnation. "Cerrar sin abrir, primaveras mil" may indicate a desire for growth and change but a fear of the unknown, as symbolized by the yearning for spring but a reluctance to open oneself up to it.
The second verse introduces the idea of emotional pain and how it can be avoided through a kind of emotional numbness. The lines "Tirar sin lanzar, no, no llega el dolor" seem to suggest that failing to invest oneself in something (such as a relationship) may be less painful than opening oneself up to the possibility of heartbreak. The chorus features a powerful metaphor likening the experience of love and heartbreak to a "triángulo de amor, Bermuda del dolor", highlighting the complex and often conflicting emotions involved. The final verse juxtaposes physical pleasure (sex) with emotional emptiness, as the singer suggests that they find more comfort in their pillow than in the person they supposedly love.
Overall, the lyrics of "La Espada y la Pared" convey a sense of confusion and disillusionment with societal conventions and personal relationships. The use of evocative metaphors and contradictory phrases creates a profound sense of dissonance and emotional complexity.
