In 1982, three guys from Concepción, Álvaro Henríquez, Roberto Titae Lindl, and Pancho Molina started a band called Los Dick Stones, whose set list was based on songs by Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, and Gene Vincent. They quickly became very popular in universities, bars, and peñas around the southern city of Concepción. Given their ambition to achieve success in the Chilean mainstream, they decided to move to the capital city of Santiago and changed their name to Los Tres. In 1988 Ángel Parra joined the band and even though Los Tres is Spanish for "the three", they decided to keep the name.
During years when culture and art began to rise again -after the cultural and night life had been reduced for almost 20 years due to the military regime that had ruled Chile since 1973-, the times were right for their music to develop and their popularity to grow. They recorded 9 albums during their first stage together, from 1982 until 2000.
In 2000 the band went into an indefinite break and its members continued their musical careers in personal projects.
On 2006 Los Tres, with the exception of Pancho Molina, announced their reunion including a show in May, the festival Vive Latino in Mexico City, and a show in Santiago de Chile. The first single Camino was already released. Their tenth album (Hágalo usted mismo) was a result of this reunion. The band is still together.
Olor a Gas
Los Tres Lyrics

Esta todo apagado, hay luna en paz
No tengo hambre, voy a revisar
Hay masa en el horno, y no es de pan
Olor a una carne
Mantel y sal
Sol celestial
Sin sábanas
Sin un colchón
Duerme tranquilo cono un liron
Seco el corazón
En la cocina había olor a gas
Ya no cuenta ovejas, hoy duerme en opaz
Busco mi camisa a tientas, voy a desfilar
Planchada y de fiesta, hay olor a gas
Olor a una carne
Mantel y sal
Es semana santa
Sol celestial
Sin sábanas
Sin un colchón
Duerme tranquilo cono un liron
Seco el corazón
Hay olor a gas
Hay olor a gas
The lyrics in the song "Olor a Gas" by Los Tres describe the eerie feeling of a dark and quiet night. The first verse describes the kitchen with the smell of gas and everything turned off. Although the singer is not hungry, he decides to check the oven, only to find that there is a mass cooking, and it is not bread. The subsequent verses depict similar scenes, such as the peacefulness of sleeping without sheets or a mattress or the search for a shirt in the dark.
However, despite the strange and slightly unnerving situations, there is a sense of calmness and tranquility, embodied by the "celestial sun" and the peacefulness of the singer's sleep, comparing himself to a sleeping mouse. The chorus of the song echoes throughout, reiterating the smell of gas in the air.
The lyrics leave a lot to interpretation since they are abstract and open to different meanings. Some listeners believe that this song reflects the feeling of loneliness amid an apocalyptic environment. The smell of gas can represent danger, and the singer's search for clothes, turning off the oven, and looking for sheets can symbolize actions taken out of boredom or the search for some sort of company.
