The band was unable to secure a record deal in Mexico, as their music was considered to be insufficiently commercial, and ended up releasing their first album Latin Ska Force independently. However, in 1999 they secured a deal with David Byrne's Luaka Bop record label to release their international debut, Los de Abajo.
The follow-up Cybertropic Chilango Power was released in 2002 and won BBC Radio 3's World Music Award for the Americas. 2006's LDA v The Lunatics saw them continue to absorb influences from around the world and included a Spanish-language version of The Fun Boy Three song "The Lunatics (Have Taken Over The Asylum)", featuring Neville Staples.
The band are supporters of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation and have played benefits gigs for the revolutionary group. The Zapatistas' Comandante Esther features on "Resistencia", the first track on LDA v The Lunatics.

The lyrics of Los de Abajo's El Loco tell the story of a man who has lost his sanity and is running through the night from one place to another. The song starts with the sound of a gunshot and the realization that the night is over. The singer hears many different voices which confuse him. Memories are all that he has left in his mind, and he sees a black door that suddenly falls, revealing the woman he loved pointing a gun at his forehead. He tries to fly away from the situation, but a loud noise shakes everything around him. The last thing he remembers is the absence of blood.
The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "adios, adios que le vaya bien," which means goodbye, goodbye, good luck. The lyrics discuss the singer's loss of his sanity and his relationships with women. The question of where he got the gun and bullet is asked multiple times, suggesting a potential murder-suicide. A CD I bought in the early 2000s in MX DF, good shit all over. The years of Gran Silencio, Panteon Rococo, Cocktail Molotov, Chavela Vargas - have them all, along with some good band from Vera Cruz, a bootleg street bought CD. Those were the times.
