Many of the Lost Dogs albums include at least one or two cover songs. Songs covered by the Lost Dogs include Bob Dylan's "Lord, Protect My Child," Leonard Cohen's "If It Be Your Will," The Beatles' "I'm A Loser," and Stephen Foster's "Hard Times Come Again No More." They have also recorded a number of Traditional or Gospel standards such as "Dust On The Bible," and "Farther Along."
In March, 2000, shortly after the release of their Gift Horse album, Gene Eugene died in his sleep at The Green Room, his recording studio in Huntington Beach, California.
2003 saw the release of the band's first DVD, Via Chicago, a black and white concert film released by Lo-Fidelity Records. A follow-up DVD, Via Chicago (All We Left Unsaid), containing additional songs from the concert, was released in 2006.
Although the loss of Eugene is noticeable, the remaining three Lost Dogs members continue to tour and record new albums. In 2004, the band got together with longtime friend Steve Hindalong to produce a special album for their summer tour. The result was entitled Mutt, and included new acoustic versions of nine songs originally written and recorded for each band member's regular rock bands, with one new song. The following year, the band would release one of their most unusual recordings to date, the almost entirely instrumental Island Dreams.
The band's most recent project, Old Angel, was released May 2010. The band — including the newest official "dog," drummer Steve Hindalong — once again hit the road for a national tour in support of their new album.
Amber Waves Goodbye
Lost Dogs Lyrics

So long Danny boy
Apple seed inside your locket
She'll miss you Danny boy
It broke your heart, she poisoned the river
turned brown the azure sky
and every fallen angel weeps when
Amber waves goodbye
In the red glare, fiery fountain
She lost you Danny boy
Echo down the purple mountain
She calls you Danny boy
Was a time you ran to your mother,
took her dancing through the rye
Now every fallen angel weeps when
Amber waves goodbye
Spacious skys
In your eyes
Boy, she woke you from that dream
of youth and innocence
Join the parade of
heroes betrayed
whose blind devotion paid the consequence
Now she needs you now
Danny boy
Bright white crosses line the hillside
So long Danny boy
She prayed to heaven
but you still died
Please come back Danny boy
God bless the poor she left in the streets
Lord she heard those boabies cry
those little fallen angels weep cause
Amber waves goodbye
those little fallen angels weep cause
Amber waves goodbye
"Amber Waves Goodbye" is a melancholic song by Lost Dogs that captures the pain of betrayal, loss, and the after-effects of war. The song tells the story of Danny boy, who is leaving his lover behind to join the army. Danny boy's lover has poisoned the river that runs through the town, and the once-azure sky has turned brown. The angels have also fallen, and Amber's departure has brought them to tears. Danny boy's mother used to take him dancing through the rye, and he was once filled with youth and innocence. However, his devotion to Amber has caused him to pay the ultimate price, just like other heroes who have been betrayed. Even with the bright white crosses lined up on the hillsides, Amber continues to pray for Danny boy's safe return.
The song's title is a reference to the "amber waves of grain" from the American patriotic song "America the Beautiful." In contrast, the "amber waves goodbye" in Lost Dogs' song represent the loss of a lover and the emotional fallout from war. The song also references several other cultural symbols, such as boabies (a Scottish term for babies) and purple mountains.
