A Town Called Hypocrisy
Lostprophets Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Can you take this broken boy
And put the pieces back as one?
Though he has all of his toys
He is never having fun

Because its not enough
Now we're growing up
We had given up
We're moving on

Because its not enough
We were growing up
We had given up
And I won't hear what you say so

Save your sympathy
Who'd you think you're fooling
Everything is dead
Now you welcome me
To a town called hypocrisy

Save your sympathy
Who'd you think you're fooling
Everything is dead
Now you welcome me
To a town called hypocrisy

A town called hypocrisy

Can you take this lonely girl
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
And pick her up from off the ground?
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
Cause there's no pride to be found
When you follow sheep around
And no future here
No future for us in this town

Because its not enough
Now we're growing up
We had given up
We're moving on

Because its not enough
We were growing up
We had given up
And I won't hear what you say so

Save your sympathy
Who'd you think you're fooling
Everything is dead
Now you welcome me
To a town called hypocrisy

Save your sympathy
Who'd you think you're fooling
Everything is dead
Now you welcome me
To a town called hypocrisy

La, la, la, la la la la la la la
La, la, la, la la la la la la la
La, la, la, la la la la la la la
La, la, la, la la la la la la la

Because its not enough
Now we're growing up
We had given up
We're moving on

Because its not enough
We were growing up
We had given up
And I won't hear what you say so

Save your sympathy
Who'd you think you're fooling
Everything is dead
Now you welcome me
To a town called hypocrisy

Save your sympathy
Who'd you think you're fooling
Everything is dead

Now you welcome me
To a town called hypocrisy

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Lostprophets’ “A Town Called Hypocrisy” reflect the band's disenchantment with society's hypocrisy and insincerity. The song features two characters, a lonely girl and a broken boy. The singer calls out to anyone who can help put the boy's fragmented self back together, even though he appears to have all the toys necessary for a happy life. But it's not enough for him or any of them. They've grown disillusioned with their environment and are searching for a way out of their suffocating attitudes and fake personas.

Lostprophets highlights the dangers of conforming blindly to tradition and societal norms in this song. The lyrics are calling for change, to become more individualistic and to follow one’s own path rather than blindly following others like sheep. The chorus condemns the hypocrisy apparent in society by drawing attention to how everything is dead. This is a warning that we have become too comfortable with our own lies and that it’s time to take action to change our ways.

I think that is not easy to separate the artist from the art, but I believe that is not fair to put all the band in the same situation of Ian. Let's be honest, this song is really good...

nightshade616

And deeply uncomfortable given that it's about complaining about being judged by others because they do "weird" stuff too.

Stephan

Let’s not forget a lot of the lyrics were actually written by Stuart the bass player. It’s not the Ian Watkins show.

I read that Stuart once punched Ian

Every couple of years I come back to lostprophets (usually being pretty drunk) and try to listen to some of my favorite songs from a time when everything seemed to make more sense. Only to realize that I can't enjoy the music like I used to and that these days are never coming back. :/
