Morning's After Me

Nothing speaks to me
I am your indolent soldier
No authority have I
Daydreaming, fetal feeling, on the void again
I am close, getting closer, closer to the end
Oh my lover, morning's after me
Face the dawn and turn your back on me
Blue eyed lizard, I am ordered to withdraw
Strip mined my own mind
With a needle needle crawl
Replace, abandon a love that couldn't give no more
Is it wrong?
To be long for a world I've never seen before
Oh my lover, morning's after me
No more running
Face the dawn and turn your back on me
A crack in the branches hung from the family tree
Morning's after me
The other side, the boy the soldier be
Into the light, into the void, I am free
Another life morning after
A crack in the branches hung from the family tree
The song "Mornings After Me" by Lou Barlow is a poetic reflection on the emotional aftermath of a failed relationship. The first stanza seems to express the singer's own lack of emotional attachment or investment in the situation. They describe themselves as an "indolent soldier" with no authority, indicating that they were perhaps passive or distant throughout the relationship. The imagery of "daydreaming" and feeling "fetal" and "on the void again" suggests a sort of emotional numbness or detachment from the world around them. The repeated phrase "closer to the end" creates a foreboding sense of finality and inevitability.
In the chorus, Barlow addresses his former lover directly, telling them that "morning's after me" and imploring them to turn away and face the dawn without him. This sense of finality and separation is reinforced in the second verse, where the singer describes feeling like a "blue eyed lizard" who is forced to withdraw, having stripped their own mind with a "needle needle crawl." The line "replace, abandon a love that couldn't give no more" suggests that the relationship was one-sided and ultimately unsustainable. However, there is a sense of yearning in the final line of the verse, as the singer wonders "is it wrong to be long for a world I've never seen before."
Overall, "Mornings After Me" is a poignant meditation on the end of a relationship, and the conflicting impulses of closure and longing that often accompany such a loss.

90210, for real? Wasn't another song from EMOH licensed for The OC, or some other such show, too? Guess you gotta be open-minded, being a revered, but also wildly underrated lo-fi musician. Breaks my heart every time regardless, this song
