Friscoe toured for the Edison company doing Diamond Disc tone tests, where Edison recordings were compared to live performances in front of theater audiences. This recording of "A Perfect Day" was used in those live comparisons.

They did like their xylopnones didn"t they? I have afew xylophone Discs myself. The practice reminds me of 60s music with electric organs; you don't hear that anymore do you?

My guess is that single instruments recorded well so they were rather popular. Plus its a time when no radio to speak of and vaudeville would have been an influence on recordings where individuals were popular entertainment. Plus , yes times change.
