Defiant
Lou Doillon Lyrics

Like a bird of storm in any currents,
I'd spread my wings
I used to ride them furious waves singing
To no country nor man will I ever be slave!
But now no Blast, no breeze will billow my sail,
Home is where I stand, don't need
Anything else.
And I never knew
This ease could leave
I never thought I'd say,
Please show me the way.
'Cause now no blast, no breeze will billow my sail
'Cause now no moon, no stars will show the way
I used to stand strong and defiant to the wind,
Like a bird of storm in any currents,
I'd spread my wings
But now no blast, no breeze will billow my sail
But now no moon, no stars will show me the way
Lou Doillon's "Defiant" is a song about realizing the vulnerability in oneself when faced with circumstances that challenge one's beliefs and strength. In the first verse, she describes herself as a bird of storm who stood strong and defiant against the wind, never bowing down to anyone or anything. She was confident in her ability to navigate through life's hardships with ease and independence. However, in the second verse, she realizes that this ease she once knew has abandoned her. She no longer has the same strength to stand alone and needs guidance to find her way. The repetition of the line "now no blast, no breeze will billow my sail" emphasizes her current state of helplessness and lack of direction.
The overall message seems to be about the inevitable change in one's beliefs and perspectives as they navigate through life. It is about accepting vulnerability and being willing to ask for help when needed, rather than stubbornly standing alone in defiance. Doillon uses vivid imagery of birds and sailing to add a poetic touch to the song and convey the message of the importance of adapting to change.
