Let Me Go

On my shoulder
I've got two
In both hands
And this far, as far as I wonder
They always call me back
Won't you let me fly
So you run
From here to there
You run
From where you're from
Dance laugh
Pretend you don't know
That you're here alive
And there stuck somewhere
Play louder, louder
So that I won't care
So that I won't care
Won't you let me fly
Won't you let me go
Won't you let me fly
Won't you let me go
Yes I love you, but I've got to let you know
Yes I love you, but I've got to let you know
Yes I love you but it's time for me to go
Tell me are you fine
Tell me are you safe
Tell me I'm free to go my way
Tell me getting ahead
It ain't letting you down
And breaking apart
It ain't holding your hand
Won't you let me fly
Won't you let me go
Won't you let me fly
Won't you let me go
The song "Let Me Go" by Lou Doillon expresses a longing for freedom and independence, and the struggle to break free from the constraints of the past. The opening lines describe the weight of past experiences and relationships, which feel like burdens that the singer is carrying along with her. Despite her desire to move forward, she feels pulled back by these forces. The refrain "Won't you let me fly, won't you let me go" expresses this desire for release and the need to break free from these shackles.
As the song progresses, the lyrics describe the various ways in which people try to distract themselves from their own internal struggles. They run from place to place, dance and laugh, and pretend that everything is okay. The singer recognizes these tactics but knows that they cannot truly free her from her own sense of confinement. The repetition of the phrase "So that I won't care" underscores this idea; the singer knows that these distractions cannot truly help her escape.
The final verse shows the singer reaching out to someone else for reassurance and confirmation that it's okay to pursue her own path. She wants to know that her choices won't let others down, but ultimately she knows that she needs to follow her own instincts. The song ends on the same refrain, emphasizing the singer's need for freedom and autonomy.
Overall, "Let Me Go" is a powerful song that articulates the universal desire for independence and the struggle to break free from one's past. The repeating refrain creates a sense of urgency and longing, while the imagery of running and dancing underscores the ways in which people try to hide from their own inner turmoil. The final verse brings the song to a poignant conclusion, as the singer seeks validation and reassurance before ultimately embracing her own independence.
