Nothing Left
Lou Doillon Lyrics

Surprised?
Cut all the strings, all the loose ends
And what now?
Well it's face to face
You and yourself
Oh but freedom doesn't taste quite the same
When there's no one around
My brain's amiss, and my heart's a mess
And I've got nothing, nothing left
My brain's amiss, and my heart's a mess
And I've got nothing, nothing left
The only one you ever trusted
You failed!
The one "gold soul" that kept you standing
In the back you stabbed!
Is there nothing sacred
In your hands
Oh but freedom doesn't taste quite the same
When there's no one around
My brain's amiss, and my heart's a mess
And I've got nothing, nothing left
My brain's amiss, and my heart's a mess
And I've got nothing, nothing left
My brain's amiss, and my heart's a mess
And I've got nothing, nothing left
My brain's amiss, and my heart's a mess
And I've got nothing, nothing left
In "Nothing Left," Lou Doillon speaks on a betrayal, a cutting of ties, and the aftermath. The person she's addressing seemed to have gotten what they wanted in the end, but it's not as satisfying as they thought it would be. They've severed all connections and left everything behind, but that freedom is not as gratifying when there's nobody to share it with. The person seems to be experiencing a kind of loneliness, wishing they had somebody to celebrate their freedom with, but they have nobody left.
Doillon then highlights the person's untrustworthiness, mentioning that they've stabbed somebody that was a key support in the back. They've failed those that trusted them, and nothing seems to be special or protected in their hands. This probably further contributes to the loneliness and despair that they feel - when you can't trust yourself or anybody else, who do you turn to?
The lines "My brain's amiss, and my heart's a mess / And I've got nothing, nothing left" emphasize the point that the person is at a complete loss. They're lost, adrift, and don't know how to pick themselves up from this point. They're feeling a complete emotional bankruptcy and experiencing a sense of emptiness. Despite that, the song doesn't have an overall hopeless tone, indicating that there's still some glimmer of hope that something worthwhile will come their way eventually.
