WHERE TO START
Lou Doillon Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Where to start, if you
Ever were to ask me
If I ever came to see it
So stand strong
You're proposing to me
A front seat to your parade
To sit and feel
Well it seems pointless to explain
Just give it a stare
If only you notice
If only you dare
I've got to stop, this obsession
I've got to start, about my reason
Let the film roll
Without me
I'm always waiting
For what comes rare
Knees break from bending
Seeking a little love here and there
But I don't blame you
For the end
The show that lets
Me be myself for taking part
But it seems pointless to explain
Well just give it a stare
If only you notice
If only you dare
I've got to stop, stop, this obsession
I've got to start, start, about my reason
And let the film roll
Without me
I've got to stop, stop, this obsession
I've got to start, start, about my reason
And let the film roll
Without me
In Lou Doillon’s “Where to Start," the song uses a metaphor of a parade and film to describe the singer's struggle with an obsession. When the singer says “I wouldn't know where to start if you ever were to ask me if I ever came to see it," she means that she is lost and confused about her identity and her place in the world. The “front seat" that someone is proposing to the singer is the opportunity to understand herself and her place in the world. But she is not sure whether she wants to take this opportunity, and whether she can handle everything that comes with it.
The line “I’ve got to stop, stop, this obsession, I’ve got to start, start, about my reason" suggests that the singer wants to break free from an obsession that has been consuming her. The metaphor of “letting the film roll without me" suggests that she needs to take a break from her life and let things unfold naturally without feeling the need to control everything.
Overall, the song conveys a sense of frustration and confusion that many people feel at some point in their lives. Through the use of metaphors and poetic imagery, Lou Doillon conveys a message of self-discovery and the need to live in the moment.

I wouldn't know where to start
If you ever were to ask me,
If I ever came to say
So is this what you're proposing to me?
A front seat to your parade,
To sit and fit?
Well it seems pointless to explain,
Just give it a stare,
If only you'd notice,
If only you'd dare
I've got to stop this obsession,
I've got to stand by my reason,
Let the film roll without me…
I'm always waiting for what comes rare,
Knees black from bending,
Seeking a little love here and there
But I don't blame you, for the act,
The show, the lights,
Maybe myself for taking part
Well it seems pointless to explain,
Just give it a stare,
If only you'd notice,
If only you'd dare
I've got to stop, stop this obsession,
I've got to stand, stand by my reason,
Let the film roll without me…
I've got to stop, stop this obsession,
I've got to stand, stand by my reason,
And let the film roll without me…
